Trace Minerals CBD Review [2019 Update]

Avatar for CBD Editorial Team
Written by The CBD Insider

This is our comprehensive review of Trace Minerals, a well-known and respected brand that has been in the supplements industry for over 40 years, and has recently joined the hemp-derived CBD market.

Our team at The CBD Insider is devoted to helping customers find the best brands, so we vet several companies each month, and only the best of the best receive thorough, in-depth reviews like this one.

One of our favorite CBD products from Trace Minerals is their 20mg softgels.

They were easy to use, tasteless, and offered a pleasant calming sensation.

The other product that stood out to our team was the 1,200mg CBD oil tincture.

While it had a moderate hemp taste, this tincture had noticeable benefits for relieving discomfort and improving sleep.

Trace Minerals is based in Ogden, Utah, just east of the Great Salt Lake where the company sources its ConcenTrace® supplement product containing “a full-spectrum of trace and ultra-trace elements in ionic form.”

ConcenTrace® is the brand’s base product that separates them from all other supplement companies.

A clinical trial found preliminary results suggesting that ConcenTrace® can help arthritis pain and partially replace NSAIDs.

When CBD grew in popularity, Trace Minerals did its homework on the cannabinoid and found it to be legitimate.

“For us to put our name on a product, we have to know what it is, and it has to get results,” said Darrin Starkey, the Manager of Education and Training for Trace Minerals.

Trace Minerals then found a reputable farm in Colorado and started creating hemp-derived CBD products with the same quality as its other supplements.

The company oversees the entire operation from “seed to shelf.”

They also have infused the CBD products with their Ionic Trace Minerals (ConcenTrace®), an incredible differentiator from other brands.

Trace Minerals holds a current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) certification and Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) affirmation, both of which are regulated by the FDA.

All of the company’s products are lab-tested, including the hemp-derived CBD ones, with a reputable laboratory.

Certificates of analysis for the CBD products are available here.

After analyzing their operation and personally testing their products, we are confident that Trace Minerals creates high-quality, safe, and effective products, earning our recommendation.

Trace Minerals CBD Review

Certain factors can make or break a CBD brand, such as how a company sources their hemp, or if the labeling matches what is inside the products.

At The CBD Insider, we measure the excellence of a brand by four primary criteria:

  • Where and how the company sources their crop
  • The extraction methods used
  • The extent to which independent, third-party laboratories test their products
  • Current certifications from federal and state agencies, and industry organizations

Where Does Trace Minerals Get Their Hemp?

Trace Minerals sources their hemp from a farm in Colorado.

According to Starkey, Trace Minerals oversees the operation from “seed to shelf” to ensure the hemp and the subsequent products are clean and pure.

Colorado is one of the best areas in the United States to grow hemp, largely due to the state being more familiar with the crop than others.

What Extraction Method Does Trace Minerals Use?

The hemp undergoes an ethanol extraction, which is a common method that preserves cannabinoid and terpene content better than others.

Third-party lab results for Trace Minerals’ products show that ethanol was not detected in any of the products except one, which was still well below the established limit.

While not as pure as the CO2 extraction method, ethanol is well-suited for full-spectrum products like Trace Minerals’.

Trace Mineral’s Third-Party Testing

Trace Minerals uses DB Labs, based in Las Vegas, as their third-party laboratory.

DB Labs conducts a full battery of tests on the products, including cannabinoid concentration, terpene profile, pesticides, microbes, mycotoxins, heavy metals, and residual solvents.

Customers can access the third-party results for their specific products by scanning the QR code printed on the labels or by going here.

Trace Minerals Certifications

As a respected supplements company for decades, Trace Minerals has collected several certifications throughout its existence.

Most importantly, the company holds a current Good Manufacturing Practice certification and a Generally Recognized as Safe affirmation for its ConcenTrace® Trace Minerals Drops, which is added to the hemp-derived CBD tinctures.

Trace Minerals is also BPA-free, meaning their plastic bottles do not contain Bisphenol A, a chemical that researchers have found may contribute to several issues, including “behavioral and developmental effects in children.”

ConcenTrace® is also Kosher and Halal certified.

You can see all their certifications here.

Where to Find Trace Minerals’ CBD Products

trace minerals quote

Trace Minerals sells their CBD products through a network of retailers.

Our preferred online retailer is Hi-Health, which consistently has all of Trace Minerals’ CBD products and offers excellent deals.

Trace Minerals also offers a “guarantee” on their products.

“Feel the difference or your money back, no questions asked,” Starkey explained.

Trace Minerals Affiliations

The company is a member of some notable organizations, such as:

  • Natural Products Association
  • American Herbal Products Association
  • American Vegetarian Association

The American Herbal Products Association has been most active in the realm of hemp and CBD.

In August 2019, the association hosted a Hemp-CBD Supplement Congress, which provided updates on the industry.

Future Products and Outlook from Trace Minerals

trace minerals quote

Trace Minerals may have plans in the future to expand their hemp-derived CBD product line.

One idea includes creating a topical product.

“Our largest organ of our body is our skin, and I think point-specific is applicable [with CBD],” said Starkey. “So I think that there’s a lot of value to [a topical].”

Starkey also spoke about the future he sees for CBD.

“I’ve been with Trace Minerals Research for 28 years, and I’ve watched different types of nutrients make a huge splash and a year later be gone,” said Starkey. “But I don’t see that happening with [CBD]. There’s enough research and information that this is going to be a nutrient out there for a very long time.”

The best CBD product for relaxation from Trace Minerals is the 20mg softgels. Taking two softgels in the evening seemed most effective at helping us wind down.

Trace Minerals CBD Product Reviews

For our Trace Minerals review, we tested the following products:

Trace Minerals Softgels Review

We tested the 20mg CBD Oil Softgels from Trace Minerals.

learn more about trace minerals cbd oil softgels 20mg

Concentration

The softgels product contains 60 softgels with 20mg of hemp-derived CBD each, which is 1,200mg of CBD per bottle.

According to the third-party lab results, our softgels contained about 18.5mg per softgel; however, the minor cannabinoids brought the total cannabinoid concentration to about 21.2mg per softgel.

While the bottle advertises 20mg of CBD, this minor discrepancy is not concerning, especially with the strong presence of minor cannabinoids.

Further proving that this is genuinely a full-spectrum product, the lab results also detected two terpenes: β-Caryophyllene and trans-Nerolidol.

Terpene concentration was 0.168mg per softgel.

At 60 softgels per bottle, these could last up to two months if used daily.

Value

Trace Minerals’ softgels are priced at $88.99, which comes out to $0.074/mg.

These softgels have an excellent price, considering the cost per mg.

Similar products that contain 60 softgels can cost upwards of $100 or more.

For example, CBDistillery—a brand well-known for affordable prices—offers CBD softgels with 30mg per softgel that cost $130, which comes out to a similar price per mg at $0.072/mg.

We are quite impressed with this price, so kudos to Trace Minerals here.

Packaging

The Trace Minerals softgels come in a dark blue plastic bottle with a child-proof lid.

Underneath the lid is a protective seal.

The bottle is graced with the Trace Minerals signature blue and white labeling.

Printed on the label are the supplement facts, ingredients list, a QR code to access third-party results, and the website where all certificates of analysis for Trace Minerals’ CBD products can be found.

Lot number and expiration date are on the bottom of the bottle.

As for the softgels themselves, they are a dark amber color.

Ingredients

Ingredients in the Trace Minerals softgels include: Softgel (gelatin, vegetable glycerin, purified water), Hemp Seed Oil, and Hemp (aerial parts) Oil Extract.

These are standard, healthy ingredients for softgels.

Scent & Flavor

As expected, there is no discernible taste or smell with the softgels.

Effectiveness

We tested the softgels for their effects on discomfort, energy levels, relaxation, and sleep.

The most noticeable benefit we found was for relaxation.

Within 30 minutes of taking the softgels, we began feeling more calm and relaxed.

Our team reported being in a better mood and feeling a sense of well-being.

As a result of feeling more relaxed, it was easier to fall asleep and stay asleep with the softgels.

We did not notice much for discomfort or energy with the softgels.

We generally needed two softgels to achieve optimal results.

Pros & Cons

Pros for the Trace Minerals softgels:

  • Well-priced
  • Convenient
  • Decent concentration
  • Helpful for relaxation and well-being

Cons for the Trace Minerals softgels:

  • One softgel may not be sufficiently effective

Trace Minerals Tinctures Review

We tested the 300mg, 600mg, and 1,200mg CBD tinctures by Trace Minerals.

learn more about cbd oil tincture 300mg

Concentration

The tinctures have concentrations of 300mg, 600mg, and 1,200mg.

According to the third-party results, the 300mg tincture contained about 272mg of CBD (9.1mg/serving) and 297mg of total cannabinoids (9.9mg/serving).

The results for the 600mg tincture showed 567mg of CBD (18.9mg/serving) and a cannabinoid total of 634mg (21.1mg/serving).

Finally, the 1,200mg tincture results detected 1,151mg of CBD (38.4mg/serving) and 1,265mg of total cannabinoids (42.2mg/serving).

It’s encouraging to see the third-party results detect a robust amount of minor cannabinoids, proving that these tinctures are made from truly full-spectrum hemp extract.

However, we expect to see this from a respected and trustworthy company like Trace Minerals.

Value

The price for the 300mg tincture is $38.99, which is $0.130/mg.

The 600mg tincture costs $67.99, which clocks in at $0.113/mg.

Finally, the 1,200mg tincture retails for $94.99, which is $0.079/mg.

The two lower concentrations are competitively priced but are slightly on the high side.

The 1,200mg tincture is well-priced at just under $0.08/mg, an excellent deal.

Many tinctures are already at the $100 mark once the concentration reaches 1,000mg, so Trace Minerals is doing a great job at keeping their products affordable.

Packaging

trace minerals cbd tincture 600mg takeaways
learn more about trace minerals tincture 600mg

The 300mg and 600mg tinctures share identical packaging.

Both are in a glass bottle with a white dropper cap; however, the 1,200mg tincture is in a non-transparent glass bottle with a dark dropper cap.

Unfortunately, none of the dropper caps have measurements on them.

All the labels contain supplement facts, an ingredients list, suggested use information, and a QR code to access third-party lab results.

The lot number and expiration date are at the bottom of the bottles.

As for the oil itself, it gets progressively darker as the concentration rises.

In the 300mg, the oil has a faint yellow color.

The oil in the 600mg is a yellow-orange color, and, finally, the oil of the 1,200mg tincture is dark amber.

Ingredients

The ingredients for all the tinctures include: Medium-chain Triglycerides Oil (from coconut), Hemp (aerial parts) Oil Extract, and Ionic Trace Minerals.

Besides the hemp extract, the most interesting ingredient is Ionic Trace Minerals.

This formula contains, as Trace Minerals puts it, “a full spectrum of trace and ultra-trace elements in ionic form.”

Some of the minerals in the formula include Magnesium, Chloride, Potassium, Sulfate, Sodium, Boron, Bromide, Calcium, Carbonate, Silicon, Nitrogen, Selenium, Phosphorus, Iodine, Chromium, Iron, Manganese, and several more.

The combination of both hemp extract and Ionic Trace Minerals makes for a nutrient-rich oil that has the potential to provide several benefits.

Scent & Flavor

All of the tinctures had a noticeable hemp taste and scent that slightly grew in intensity as we went up in concentration.

The taste of the 300mg tincture was hardly noticeable, while the 600mg had a more moderate hemp taste.

The 1,200mg tincture was slightly stronger than the 600mg but was plenty bearable.

Effectiveness

learn more about trace minerals cbd oil tincture 1200mg

We tested the effects of the tinctures on relieving discomfort, energy levels, relaxation, and improving sleep.

The most noticeable benefits from the tinctures were relief from discomfort and a boost in energy levels.

Discomfort

For discomfort, we preferred to take the 1,200mg tincture.

It helped relieve occasional aches and overactive nerves.

Energy

For energy, the 300mg tincture seemed to help the most.

Taking it in the morning helped us clear the mental fog and feel more awake.

It gave us a boost of energy with a 15-30 minute onset time.

Our team felt more focused and productive when taking it.

Sleep

We also noticed some benefits for sleep, primarily from the 1,200mg tincture.

It seemed to help us fall asleep quicker than without CBD.

Pros & Cons

Pros for the Trace Minerals CBD tinctures:

  • Various concentrations
  • Reasonable prices
  • Contains Trace Minerals’ ConcenTrace®
  • Helpful for discomfort and energy

Cons for the Trace Minerals CBD tinctures:

  • The taste may be unpleasant to some

trace minerals quote

While CBD is not Trace Minerals’ primary nutrient, the company has created a base of products that will appeal to most CBD customers.

Furthermore, they have added their ConcenTrace® formulation—the product Trace Minerals is well-known for—to the CBD tinctures, creating a truly unique product for the CBD marketplace.

“Our niche is that we add our base product, which is the liquid minerals, to these products, which we believe helps enhance, absorb, and activate those nutrients,” said Starkey.

“If someone asked us, ‘What makes you so different?’ I’ll tell them, ‘Do you know Trace Minerals, and do you know our base products? If you have that understanding, then you know exactly what separates us from any other company because we’re the only ones doing what we do,'” continued Starkey.

As Starkey notes, the addition of ConcenTrace® to the tinctures is a real differentiator that adds significant value for CBD customers.

Here’s some general information on Trace Minerals’ CBD products.
