We tested the CBDfx CBD Muscle Balm, a 2oz, 150mg CBD topical.

The topical contains a medley of ingredients and CBD isolate, which means it contains 0% THC.

We review CBD topicals by the quality of their hemp material, CBD concentration, product packaging, ingredients, effectiveness, and value.

Let’s start with the quality of the hemp extract in CBDfx’s Muscle Balm.

CBDfx Hemp Quality

CBDfx sources their hemp from a farm in Kentucky that has been licensed by the Kentucky Department of Agriculture.

 

Farmers grow the hemp using organic methods while conducting tests throughout the cultivation process to ensure the hemp and soil is free of heavy metals and pesticides.

The hemp is then brought to a facility that meets FDA food ingredient standards for extraction.

CBDfx uses CO2, which is considered the gold standard for extraction, to extract oil from the whole hemp plant.

After the products are formulated, CBDfx does third-party testing for every single batch of their products.

The brand uses ProVerde Laboratories and Biocann Laboratories, both of which are ISO-17025 accredited.

These labs test for cannabinoid potency, residual solvents, heavy metals, pesticides, microbes, terpene profiling, and mycotoxins.

All lab results are available directly on CBDfx’s website.

CBDfx’s manufacturing process has been audited, and the company has cGMP and ISO 9001 certifications.

Concentration

The CBDfx CBD Muscle Balm contains 150mg of CBD, which averages out to 75mg of CBD per ounce.

According to the certificate of analysis for the batch our product was from, it had 148.2mg.

In comparison with other CBD topicals, the Muscle Balm has a below-average concentration.

While the concentration is not indicative of a product’s efficacy, it can be concerning to see relatively small amounts of CBD.

Thankfully, we experienced noticeable benefits using the Muscle Balm, so the concentration was not a concern for us in regard to effectiveness.

The price per mg is high for a CBD topical, due to the low concentration.

Regarding the price per ounce, the Muscle Balm is decently priced.

Overall, CBDfx asks an expensive price for their CBD topical with so little CBD.

Packaging

The Muscle Balm comes in a 2oz metal tin with a screw-top lid.

On the lid, the balm claims to contain broad-spectrum hemp extract and non-GMO.

According to the certificate of analysis, the only cannabinoid that registered was CBD, which seems like a stretch to say this product is broad-spectrum.

The bottom provides an FDA disclaimer, a claim for the product’s legality, an ingredients list, and a QR code that can be scanned to access the product’s third-party lab results.

Printed on the bottom of the tin were the expiration date, which showed the balm was good for about two years, and batch number.

We consider the packaging to be simple yet professional.

However, the text on the bottom of the balm is difficult to see, so it would be better if CBDfx used a larger font.

Ingredients

 

Ingredients in the CBDfx CBD Muscle Balm include: Sunflower Oil, Jojoba Oil, Beeswax, Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Olive Oil, Tocopherol, Peppermint Oil, CBD Rich Hemp Oil (150mg), Camphor Oil, and Wintergreen Oil.

CBD has evidence that suggests it may help relieve discomfort and inflammation.

These ingredients, in addition to the CBD, are excellent for the primary purpose of relieving discomfort, particularly, peppermint, camphor, and wintergreen oil.

Each of these oils is used in various products that intend to relieve pain and inflammation.

For example, camphor is used in Icy Hot to treat arthritis.

Peppermint and wintergreen have similar compounds that are used for relieving discomfort.

All three also may provide a cooling or warming sensation on the skin.

Texture & Scent

CBDfx’s CBD Muscle Balm has a semi-firm, slightly grainy texture.

To apply the balm, you may need to warm the contents with your finger.

Despite being slightly grainy, the balm applies smoothly and does not leave the skin feeling greasy.

A mild cooling or warming sensation may be felt.

Our team loved the strong scent of wintergreen and peppermint oil.

The balm was also easy enough to use.

Effectiveness

We tested the CBDfx CBD Muscle Balm for its effects on recovery/discomfort, irritation, and skincare.

Here are the results of our findings:

Recovery

The Muscle Balm did an excellent job for relieving discomfort and aiding recovery.

After intense exercise, the balm soothed sore muscles with its cooling and warming sensations.

The balm also helped us recover quicker than without CBD by about 24 hrs.

We applied the balm about 2-3 times per day to achieve this result.

It also worked on discomfort not caused by exercise.

Tension caused by stress was also alleviated when using the balm.

Irritation

The peppermint and wintergreen oils were particularly useful for soothing irritation.

We used the balm on bug bites, specifically, mosquito bites.

CBDfx’s CBD Muscle balm significantly relieved the irritating itchiness.

It may have also helped reduce the inflammation from the bite.

Skincare

While the balm is not intended for skincare, we did find mild efficacy in this area.

The balm seemed to help minor blemishes on the skin disappear more quickly than without any treatment.

Conclusion

Our review of the CBDfx CBD Muscle Balm was overwhelmingly positive with few negative takeaways.

CBDfx has an impeccable operation starting with the soil to the third-party testing, which leads to high-quality products such as the Muscle Balm.

The only negatives are the price, which is still affordable but could be better, and the low CBD concentration.

Other than these minor issues, we were pleased with how well the balm worked.
