Select CBD Changes Name To Social CBD
In late August 2019, Select CBD underwent a name change to become Social CBD.
In an email sent to customers, Select CBD said, “Don’t worry, every reason you’ve come to trust and love our products will stay the same.”
According to the new website, the brand wanted to distance themselves from the cannabis scene, because “hemp and cannabis play very different roles in our lives, and we felt it was in everyone’s best interest that we stayed true to our mission that’s singularly focused on delivering pure, powerful, and most of all, trusted hemp products to people who care about their health.”
Social CBD’s Parent Company: Sentia Wellness
Sentia Wellness does not consider itself a “CBD company.”
Rather, it’s a self-proclaimed “21st Century Wellness Brand.”
Sentia owns Social CBD and Zooey, a brand focused on CBD-infused topicals that sells its products solely through Social.
Sentia also works with boardsports clothing giant Volcom.
The company has secured partnerships with retailers, like CVS Pharmacy, Walgreens, and 7-11, as well as athletes such as Nyjah Huston and the Portland Thorns.
Social CBD Background
Born in August 2019, Social CBD is the reformation of Select CBD.
Select CBD started in 2017 and became one of the most well-known brands on the Pacific coast.
Operating under parent company Cura Cannabis, Select CBD had a sister brand simply called “Select” that dealt with THC products.
After Select was bought by Curaleaf for nearly $1 billion, Select CBD was rebranded to become Social CBD to create some distance between itself and the marijuana industry.

What Makes Social CBD Unique?

Where Does Social CBD Oil Come From?
Social CBD sources their hemp from Oregon.

The hemp is transferred to Social CBD in a chain of custody with a certificate of authenticity when it arrives.

The Lavender Social CBD Drops contain 2,000mg of CBD isolate, while the Vanilla Mint Social CBD Broad-Spectrum Drops hold 1,500mg of CBD.
According to lab results, the lavender tincture had 2,244mg (74.8mg/serving) and the vanilla mint tincture had 1,560mg (51.9mg/serving).
The tinctures both provide 30 servings (1 milliliter = 1 serving).
THC was not detected in either tincture.
Value
Social CBD charges $120 ($0.06/mg) for the 2,000mg lavender tincture and $125 ($0.083/mg) for the 1,500mg vanilla mint tincture.

We found that the activation time for the tinctures was between 30 minutes and one hour.
The effects generally lasted for four to six hours.
With the vanilla mint broad-spectrum tincture, we found help with energy and focus.
However, our team often required a higher dosage than we usually needed with full-spectrum oil.
Our team also noticed mild results for relieving discomfort.
The lavender tincture was excellent for relaxation and sleep.
One of our team members made the “mistake” of using the oil in the middle of a workday to help him relax.
While he felt relaxed, he also struggled with feeling tired for the rest of the day.
Using the tincture about 30 minutes before bed noticeably improved our sleep quality.
Team members fell asleep faster and slept through the night without waking up as often when compared to not using CBD.

The gel caps contain 33.33 mg of CBD per serving with 30 gel caps per bottle, which approximately adds up to 1,000 mg of CBD.
This concentration is slightly higher than other brands, who often make capsules or softgels with 20 to 30 mg of CBD per serving.
What really separates Social CBD from the rest of the CBD capsule market is the concentration of their added ingredients in their Boost gel capsules, as well as their other capsule products.
In Boost, Social CBD adds 75 mg of Yerba mate and 75 mg of Moringa to each capsule.
That combines for 183.33 mg of active ingredients.
Value
As with the Social CBD Drops, Social CBD’s gel capsules are priced at $60.00, clocking in at $0.06/mg and $2.00/capsule.
This is a competitive price in comparison to other brands offering a similar product.
We compared the prices of capsule products from brands offering 30 mg of CBD and 30 capsules per bottle with Social CBD, and Social CBD had the best price of all of them.
Social CBD’s price also beat out some brands that only offered 25 mg of CBD per capsule in 30 capsule products.
What makes Social CBD even more attractive is the added herbs that many other CBD brands do not offer with their capsule products.
Packaging
Like with the vape pens and tinctures, the Social CBD Gel Capsules come in boxes.
This packaging differs slightly from the packaging of the other products as these are color-coded with the capsule name on the front of the box.
The bottles for the capsules have child-proof caps that require you to push and twist.
Unfortunately, with the gel capsules, the third-party lab results are not directly on the box or bottle, as is the case with the vape pens and tinctures. You’ll need to email Select CBD with your batch number to get the lab results.
The Boost gel capsules themselves are dark amber in color.

Yerba mate and Moringa are the other main ingredients besides CBD, and they have similar effects.
Both herbs are believed to help combat fatigue, which could boost your energy and focus whenever you’re feeling drained.
Yerba mate is particularly powerful because it contains caffeine, which gives it the ability to energize.
Scent & Flavor
The Boost Social CBD Gel Caps do not have any noticeable smell to them; however, they do taste slightly sweet.
Effectiveness
Social CBD does not provide an activation time for their gel capsules.
According to our experience, the onset time took about 20 to 30 minutes, and the effects lasted for about four hours on average.
Our team found the Boost gel capsules helped us feel more energetic and gave us mental clarity.
Boost was particularly beneficial in the morning, as it quickly got us out of our morning mental fog and improved our productivity from the start of the day.
The Boost capsules were also useful in the middle of the day for a pick-me-up when we started hitting the mid-afternoon wall.
Overall, our team felt a greater sense of productivity and accomplishment after using the Boost gel caps.

That’s 83.33 mg of CBD per ounce of product.
The concentration of CBD for topicals varies widely in the market, usually ranging from 150 mg to 500 mg, and rarely exceeding that.
The amount of product also differs, usually from one ounce to four ounces.
Social CBD’s Muscle Rub is on the lower end of the spectrum for the amount of CBD, yet on the higher side for product size.
Together, that’s a recipe for a low concentration of CBD.
While the amount of CBD isn’t negligible, it seems the other ingredients are what make this product useful.
Value
Social CBD’s Muscle Rub is priced at $35.00, which is $0.14/mg and $11.67/oz.
Once again, Social CBD has another excellently priced product that is one of the lowest on the market.
Generally, CBD topicals range anywhere from $40 to $60, and few are lower than Social CBD’s price per mg.
The low price from Social CBD correlates with the low concentration of CBD, but that does not mean this is a low quality topical.
On the contrary, the ingredients in Social CBD’s Muscle Rub make it a premium product that won’t break the bank.
Packaging
The Muscle Rub comes in a box that is not as flashy as some of the other products.
Unlike the other product packaging, there are no third-party lab results directly on the box, but a batch number to request those results is on the back.
Social CBD’s Muscle Rub comes in a three-ounce squeeze tube, which is an element we find more appealing than scraping cream out of a jar like most companies seem to do.
It’s a small, yet more professional feature.

That’s a long list, so we’ll pare this down to the main ingredients (excluding CBD): Arnica Montana Flower Extract, Natural Menthol, Ilex Paraguariensis Leaf Extract (i.e., yerba mate), Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, and Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil.
Arnica is known to have pain-relieving properties and is often used to treat inflammation, bruises, and other similar injuries.
Menthol helps relieve pain by stimulating opioid receptors and numbing them. It also provides a cooling sensation that reduces the heat from inflammation.
Ilex Paraguariensis Leaf Extract is believed to help with muscle recovery, such as after exercise.
Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract and Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil both are known for their anti-inflammatory properties.
All of these ingredients combine to create a spectacular topical that is effective for alleviating muscle pain and inflammation.
Scent & Texture
The Muscle Rub has a strong menthol scent, but it’s not overbearing and dissipates quickly.
It’s creamy and thin, and rubbing in the cream only takes a few moments before it is fully absorbed into the skin.
It leaves no greasiness, only the cooling sense of menthol.
Effectiveness
The Muscle Rub works almost immediately and lasts for about two hours.
We found great results with the Muscle Rub for pain.
Several of our team members carry stress in their shoulders and applying the Muscle Rub here helped the muscles relax.
The rub was also useful for inflammation.
We applied the cream to sore muscles from intense exercise and tested if it would help speed up recovery.
It seemed to help reduce recovery time by a little bit, but it was primarily helpful for reducing inflammation momentarily.
This reduction allowed us to put more focus on tasks rather than soreness.
One team member used the Muscle Rub on bug bites, specifically mosquito bites.
The cream alleviated the pain and inflammation for some time, while the menthol soothed the irritation.

Concentration
Each Social CBD Patch is infused with 20 mg of CBD that is released over 24 hours.
While transdermal patches have been around for a while with other supplements and active ingredients, CBD patches are relatively new.
As we’ll describe in the rest of this review, we believe that 20 mg is too little for the patches to be as effective as possible.
If we were to notice any effects, we would need to wear two 20 mg patches, which means it would be much more cost-efficient to purchase a 60 mg patch.
With that said, other customers could find 20 mg beneficial for them, especially if they are just beginning with CBD.
Value
A singular 20 mg Social CBD Patches is priced at $7.99, which is a whopping $0.40/mg.
The three-pack sells for $20.99, which is $0.35/mg and $7.00/patch.
This is a high price for a low concentration of CBD that releases gradually over time.
However, the value a patch possesses that other CBD products don’t—at least not to the same degree—is convenience.
Having the ability to slap on a well-designed patch that “permeates all seven layers of the skin,” as Social CBD claims, and not worry about it for 24 hours is one of the most convenient ways to take CBD.
Hopefully, as technology improves and more brands develop patches of their own, this will drive prices down.
Packaging
Our three-pack of Social CBD patches came in a box that contained individual packages for each patch.
The box does not have the lab results on it like other products, but it does have a batch number on the back.
The packages have directions on the back that show you how to apply the patch. Inside the package, you’ll find the patch, two alcohol swabs, and a small card with directions and pictures on how to use the patch.
The patch itself is skin-toned, thick, and 2.5” x 2”.
According to the packaging, and our own experience (i.e., surviving a shower), the patch is water-resistant.
You’ll learn how to use the patch in a couple of sections below.

Although the ingredients list is simple, the technology is anything but.
Whatever specific compounds or “ingredients” are used to create the patch, it is made in such a way to transport the active ingredient (in this case, CBD) through your skin and into your bloodstream.
Transdermal administration has one of the highest bioavailability rates compared with other CBD administration routes.
The absorption rate is around 40% for transdermal products, according to a study.
Applying The Patch
Putting on the patch is simple.
First, use the alcohol swabs to clean the area you intend to put the patch on.
Ideally, this should be a hairless and venous spot on your body, like your wrist or forearm.
If you want a more discreet location, the top of your foot could also work, as it is particularly venous and can easily be covered by shoes and socks.
Once you’ve cleaned the area, remove the protective backing from the patch and then apply it to the skin.
Press down firmly for about 30 seconds to make sure it stays on.
The patch should stay on with no problem after that.
We took showers, washed our hands, and slept with it on without it falling off.
Effectiveness
Unfortunately, our team did not notice much of a difference with the 20 mg patches.
The most useful aspect of the patch was that it provided a moderate sense of well-being and calm, but it did not take away anxiety like with other CBD products.
It may have helped with sleep slightly, but our results were too inconclusive to tell.
We think 60 mg of CBD—and higher CBD concentrations in general—would likely have a more pronounced effect and is better suited for transdermal administration.
