Chances are that you or someone you know takes CBD to help promote relaxation or sleep. With that in mind, it would seem odd to believe this naturally occurring compound could also provide a boost in energy, right? However, based on early research, it appears that using CBD for energy may be the next item added to its list of potential benefits.
CBD is a naturally occurring compound found in the cannabis plant. Often referred to as THC’s cousin, CBD forgoes the intoxicating effects associated with THC. In the past 10 years, CBD has become a popular topic of discussion amongst both researchers and the general public due to the ever-growing list of potential health benefits it may provide.
Increased interest from researchers, decreased regulatory hurdles, and a wide product selection are all contributing factors behind CBD’s rapid rise to fame. With around 390 clinical trials currently underway, it is no secret that scientists around the world are racing to definitively unlock all of CBD’s secrets.
It should come as no surprise that CBD is readily available in most retailers around the nation. Although a couple of states still treat CBD as a controlled substance, most have warmly welcomed it. Manufacturers have created countless types of CBD-infused products, ranging from oils, edibles, vapes, capsules, and of course, smokable flower.
CBD as an energy booster may initially seem like a contradictory thought given that many people use it to promote relaxation. However, as more research becomes available, it appears CBD may also play a role in our bodies’ levels of alertness, focus, and overall energy.
One example of CBD’s role in alertness levels was uncovered by scientists at the National Autonomous University of Mexico’s Department of Neurosciences. Their study, which explored CBD’s role in sleep modulation, stated that “CBD administered during the lights-on period increased wakefulness and decreased rapid eye movement sleep.”
Researchers were able to deduce that CBD plays a role in the activation of neurons, specifically in the hypothalamus. Other studies are noting similar findings as they explore this field. In a study published by Bentham Science, scientists researched the potential use of CBD as a wake-promoting agent.
Not only did this study also confirm CBD’s impact on the hypothalamus, but it also reported that CBD increased the c-Fos expressions in the brain’s dorsal raphe nuclei (DRN) region, an observation that we know to correlate to wakefulness.
Additionally, based on findings published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, researchers believe the endocannabinoid system (ECS) also plays a role in the body’s regulation of energy metabolism.
CBD’s resume has become quite impressive. Beyond promotion of wakefulness, anecdotal evidence has led researchers to explore its other uses. Preliminary results have shown CBD’s potential use in a multitude of both physical and mental disorders.
In a study published by Frontiers in Immunology, researchers lauded CBD as a “useful and promising molecule that may help patients with a number of clinical conditions.” The study explored the potential benefits of CBD in a number of conditions, including epilepsy, substance abuse disorders, schizophrenia, PTSD, and more.
Of course, without further research, scientists are unable to definitively declare CBD as a treatment option. That said, given the amount of clinical trials underway, we’re likely closer than we think to unraveling the mysteries of this compound.

Drug testing is not only a concern many face from their employer, but it is also a harsh reality for most student and professional athletes. Fortunately, as CBD’s regulatory hurdles continue to fall, many athletic organizations are also loosening restrictions for athletes.
Once considered a prohibited substance by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), the agency has changed its tune on CBD use by athletes. In 2018, WADA removed CBD from its prohibited substances list.
Although this is certainly a progressive move forward, WADA warns that “athletes should be aware that some CBD oils and tinctures extracted from cannabis plants, may also contain THC and other cannabinoids that could result in a positive test for a prohibited cannabinoid.”
If you’re an athlete or just an individual concerned about drug testing, you should ensure your CBD products are THC-free. For more information on CBD and drug testing, we recommend checking out this article from our CBD Knowledge Center.
Although definitive research is limited, preliminary evidence has shown promise in CBD’s potential energy boosting characteristics. As more studies are published, scientists will likely gain a deeper understanding into the mechanisms of this naturally occurring cannabinoid.
