Comprehensive CBD Oil Review: Receptra Naturals

receptra naturals featured image

Our team at The CBD Insider is devoted to informing consumers and helping them find the best possible CBD products. We vet several companies each month and only the elite receive thorough, in-depth reviews like this one.

Here, we’re reviewing Receptra Naturals.

(Be sure to also check out our comprehensive reviews of Hemp Health Inc and Panacea Life Sciences)

Our favorite product was the Receptra Body Butter. The soothing scent and smooth texture made this our favorite product from the beginning. Using the Body Butter only confirmed our first impression as it effectively moisturized dry skin and faded some blemishes.

recommended product: receptra body butter

Other products that especially impressed us were the Receptra Active Lifestyle extracts. The Elite and Pro tinctures significantly improved our sleep, and the difference was striking on nights we did not take it before bed. Intriguingly, the extracts also gave us energy for the day, drastically improving our mood.

The team at Receptra Naturals is dedicated to creating high-quality products made from premium materials. More importantly, they desire to educate the public about the benefits of CBD and give back to communities both small and large.

Based in Greenwood Village, Colorado, a city in the southern part of the Denver metropolitan area, the company sources all its hemp from Colorado family farms. The farmers use organic methods to cultivate the plant and then handpick the hemp flowers at harvest time.

Receptra only uses hemp flowers—the richest part of the plant in cannabinoids and terpenes—to create their extract. While this is more expensive to do than extracting oil from the stalk and leaves, oil from the hemp flower produces a more potent and efficacious product.

Receptra then uses ethanol extraction, a clean and safe method best for creating full-spectrum products, to create their oil. All of Receptra’s products are full-spectrum, and the trace amount of THC levels are well within the legal limit (0.3%).

Testing and transparency is an essential component of Receptra’s operation, as they conduct extensive testing per established federal manufacturing guidelines. Every batch of Receptra’s products are tested for potency and toxicity, and COA’s for each of these results are available on the company’s website.

It’s also important to those at Receptra to be involved in the community, especially with those who enjoy being active. Receptra has partnered with multiple athletes from a range of sports such as MMA fighters, former and current NFL players, professional skateboarders, and hockey players.

After reviewing the company and its products, it’s clear to our team that Receptra Naturals provides high-quality, effective products at affordable prices, all with the goal of spreading the truth about CBD and its benefits.

How We Evaluated Receptra Naturals

brand criteria

Certain factors can make or break a CBD brand, such as how a company sources its hemp, or if the labeling matches what is inside the products.

At The CBD Insider, we measure the excellence of a brand by four primary criteria:

  • Where and how the company sources its crop
  • The extraction methods used
  • The extent to which their products are tested by independent, third-party laboratories
  • A current Good Manufacturing Practice certification with the FDA

Let’s start with how Receptra sources the hemp they use.

Receptra’s Sourcing Methods

Receptra works with family farms from Colorado to source its hemp, the number of which varies from year to year.

These farmers use organic methods and handpick the hemp when harvest time comes around, allowing farmers to decide which specific plants are suitable for use and to preserve the cannabinoid content within.

What makes Receptra unique in this space is that they create their products from the hemp flower, as opposed to the stalk and stems that most other companies use.

The flower is richest in cannabinoids (like CBD) and terpenes versus other plant parts, and while it’s also more expensive to use, Receptra prioritizes quality over cost.

“That’s where the good stuff is,” said Lane Radbill, the VP of Marketing. “Using the flower gives us the opportunity to provide the best products from the best parts of the hemp plant.”

As an all-natural and organic company, Receptra has similar standards for its added ingredients.

Receptra sources these ingredients, such as essential oils and carrier oils, from various suppliers that qualify under current Good Manufacturing Practice guidelines.

One such supplier is Nutiva.

Nutiva is a popular company in the health and wellness industry that produces plant-based foods and body care products, and it also happens to be one of the few that carries certified organic MCT (medium chain triglycerides) oil. Receptra uses this MCT oil as a carrier oil in all of their tinctures.

Receptra’s Extraction Methods

Receptra solely uses ethanol to extract oil from the hemp flower.

Ethanol is a clean and efficient extraction method well-suited for full-spectrum products.

The oil goes through about nine filtrations and then is purified to remove any residual solvent.

After that, Receptra mostly leaves the oil alone until it’s ready to be emulsified into their products.

“Our philosophy on our oil is once you extract it and purify it, and get your solvent out, you really shouldn’t touch it anymore after that,” said Chris Whaley, the VP of Manufacturing at Receptra.

Leaving the oil in this crude state preserves the cannabinoids and terpenes within the oil, making it more likely to be effective.

Third-Party Testing

Receptra conducts third-party testing with every batch of product they make. The Certificates of Analysis (COA) for each test are directly available on their site.

Unlike other brands, Receptra also provides an interactive COA that teaches consumers how to properly read and understand a COA, a testament to the company’s goal to educate consumers.

Every product comes with a green label that provides its specific batch code. This code will bring up the product’s corresponding COA when they input it here on Receptra’s site.

“For people out there looking to buy,” said Whaley, “what needs to be their number one priority is making sure that the company you’re buying from is transparent about their testing and about their results.”

Good Manufacturing Practice

Currently, Receptra does not have a Good Manufacturing Practice certification with the FDA.

However, Receptra operates according to 21 CFR Part 111—the current Good Manufacturing Practice standards for dietary supplements—and is expecting to be certified in April 2019.

Website

A functional, informative, yet simple website is essential to creating a positive user experience and drawing consumers back.

User Experience

Receptra’s site is simple, sporting a clean look and user-friendly functionality.

With a relatively small product offering, it’s easy to find any product you’re looking for.

The site also has an education tab that houses the company’s blog, which provides informative pieces on topics about what CBD is, how to use the cannabinoid, and even recipes involving CBD.

A page is also dedicated to lab results for all products, along with an explanation of how to read a COA.

Customer Service

According to Receptra’s site, orders typically arrive in 2-5 days once shipped.

Customers can request a refund within 30 days of purchase, and Receptra says they handle nearly all customer issues within 48 hours.

Our team was impressed with Receptra’s customer service, which was prompt and friendly, replying to an email within 15 minutes.

Online Consumer Reviews

Reviewers can’t say enough good things about Receptra’s products, often stating that Receptra’s extracts boosted their energy levels and relieved their stress and anxiety.

Several reviewers say both the tinctures and topicals alleviate physical discomfort, improve their sleep quality, and increase their ability to focus.

Those who bought the pet product find their pets are calmer and have less anxiety.

Customers can only post reviews if they create an account with Receptra and have purchased the product they want to review.

All of Receptra’s items have a 5-star rating on their respective product pages.

Community

Receptra is an active and valued participant in the local and global community.

Receptra has partnered with several athletes, including more than 30 MMA fighters, winter sports athletes, professional skateboarders, current and retired NFL players, and hockey players from the NHL down to the high school level.

These partnerships have not only helped athletes perform their best, but also spread the word about CBD and its benefits.

The company is also about to launch a giving program called Receptra Gives. This initiative will send proceeds from their Receptra Pet sales to help displaced animals that were affected by the California wildfires in November.

Additionally, Receptra has plans to team up with Trees for the Future, a nonprofit organization working to end hunger and poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa. This partnership will use proceeds from Receptra’s sales to help plant trees and educate farmers on sustainable farming techniques.

Finally, Receptra is also a member of the National Hemp Association (NHA).

The NHA’s mission is “to support the growth and development of all aspects of the industrial hemp industry” through educating the public, building a community of like-minded individuals and organizations, and working with influencers to create regulations and standards for hemp.

Science and Research

Receptra is currently in partnership with “multiple agencies” that are specifically researching Receptra’s products; however, they could not offer any specifics on these studies.

“Once we have the results, trust me, we’ll be shouting them,” said Whaley.

Future Outlook

Lots of innovation is in the works at Recepta.

First, Receptra is planning to release more products, including capsules, a sleep product, and pet treats.

Afterward, Receptra plans on potentially enhancing some of their already impressive original products, such as the topicals. This enhancement will likewise be external, with new packaging that should improve the appearance of their products to match the level of quality within.

Finally, to reward their growing consumer base, the company also plans to roll out a “robust” customer rewards program in the next year.

That number of customers may soon grow exponentially.

The recent passage of the 2018 Farm Bill and the subsequent full legalization of hemp has market projections soaring for the hemp and CBD industries.

As more people enter the hemp and CBD markets, Kingsbury hopes that consumers will continue to do their research.

“Now that hemp is federally legal, I hope consumers aren’t fooled into thinking they can jump right into using CBD without doing their research first,” said Kingsbury. “There are several great brands out there, and Receptra is one of them. However, there are also a lot of questionable brands producing CBD products; consumers need to do their own research so they have a clear understanding of what they are putting in their bodies.”

Best Products for Common CBD Benefits

We’ll get into our review of some of Receptra’s offering in just a moment, but first, here are the products we found best-suited to help with common ailments.

Best CBD Product for Stress

receptra active elite

The best product we found for relieving stress was the Active Lifestyle: Elite extract. This tincture gave us a great boost of energy and put us in good moods, helping us better handle the everyday stress we face.

Best CBD Product for Pain & Inflammation

receptra targeted topical

The best CBD product for pain and inflammation seems to be the Targeted Topical. After applying to an area of discomfort, the topical alleviates pain and inflammation quickly, usually within minutes and can last for a few hours.

Best CBD Product for Skin Care

receptra body butter

Receptra’s Body Butter was the most popular product for several members of our research team. With a smooth, non-greasy texture, pleasant smell, and incredible efficacy, this Body Butter has to be one of the most exceptional products available for moisturizing, restoring, and protecting skin.

Receptra Products We Tested

We try products to ensure they are made just like a company says and to help you make the best purchasing decisions.

Our team decided to try five products from Receptra:

Why We Chose These Products

Receptra has a relatively small product selection, so the five products we chose were not a difficult decision.

We decided to try an item from each product category, excluding the lip balm, since these best represented Receptra’s options and allowed us to easily compare Receptra’s products to the offerings of other CBD brands.

receptra products we tested

Receptra Health and Wellness: Plus

We tried the 1 oz, 1,500 mg option of the Receptra Health and Wellness: Plus extract.

receptra plus tested

Concentration and Value

The 1,500 mg Plus extract offers 44 mg/serving at a price of $0.09/mg.

As is the case with the majority of Receptra’s products, this tincture is highly concentrated, and it exists at one of the best prices you’ll find on the market.

With 33 servings to boot, this could last a whole month (and then some) depending on how often you use it. However, if you plan on using it any more than once a day, we recommend you go with the bigger Plus extract.

The larger version of this product (2 oz, 3,000 mg) drops drastically down in price per mg to $0.067/mg. So for those who want to use this product 2-3 times a day, purchasing the 2 oz Plus tincture will save you a lot of money in the long run.

Packaging

All tinctures come in identical packaging excluding label colors.

The Plus tincture comes in an amber glass bottle with a black, child-proof dropper cap. The dropper has markings on it to show you how much oil you’re taking.

The labeling provides supplement facts, suggested use information, and an ingredients list.

A green label is attached to the tincture with the product’s batch code that will give you access to the corresponding COA on Receptra’s testing page.

Overall, the packaging is simple and nothing to write home about, but it tells you everything you need to know.

Quality of Non-CBD Ingredients

The Plus extract includes MCT Oil, Sunflower Oil, and Organic Natural Flavors.

MCT oil and sunflower oil possess excellent potential benefits all their own, complementing the potency of Receptra’s hemp oil.

Scent/Flavor/Texture

The Plus extract smells like mint and berries, more specifically blackberries and raspberries.

The flavor is pleasant and is nearly identical to the smell with a hint of mint. The flavor was potent enough to make you forget this was a hemp product, but it did not linger, leaving little to no aftertaste.

The texture is smooth and somewhat thick.

What We Used it For

We used the Plus extract to test its effects on stress, sleep, energy levels, and our mood throughout the day.

Effectiveness

We took the Plus extract twice per day, in the morning and evening.

The Plus tincture improved our sleep and also provided us with a sense of calm, which helped relieve our stress and improved our mood.

We didn’t notice much of a change in our energy levels.

Potential Uses

We believe the best potential uses for the Plus extract are for sleep and improving your sense of well-being through daily use.

Receptra Active Lifestyle: Elite

We tried the 1 oz, 1,000 mg version of the Receptra Active Lifestyle: Elite extract.

receptra active tested

Concentration and Value

Elite offers 30 mg/serving at the cost of $0.08/mg. The tincture also contains 10 mg/serving of turmeric since it’s part of the Active Lifestyle line.

This serving size—the median of Receptra’s five extract options—is probably the most suitable option for the majority of CBD users.

Also, once again, this is one of the most affordable tinctures on the market considering price per mg.

The extract also contains 33 total servings.

Packaging

The Elite tincture has all the same features as the Plus: amber glass bottle and a black, child-proof dropper cap with measurements, and all the usual supplement and ingredient information.

A green label with the batch code is attached.

Again, it’s a simple label that does its job without any fuss, but it probably wouldn’t catch our eye if it were sitting on a drugstore shelf.

Quality of Non-CBD Ingredients

In addition to hemp extract, the Elite extract contains Hemp Seed Oil, MCT Oil, Avocado Oil, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Grapeseed Oil, Sunflower Oil, Turmeric (Curcumin), and Organic Natural Flavors.

These are organic and all-natural ingredients that are often used in health and wellness products.

The turmeric, in particular, adds another layer of anti-inflammatory power.

Scent/Flavor/Texture

Elite has a notable berry smell with a hint of mint and has a taste similar to its scent.

Our team found no discernible difference in smell, taste, or texture between the Elite extract and the Plus extract.

What We Used it For

We used the Elite extract to test its effects on stress, sleep, energy levels, and our mood throughout the day.

Effectiveness

We took the Elite tinctures twice per day, once in the morning, and once in the evening.

The most noticeable effect from the Elite was the boost in energy. In turn, it elevated our moods and helped us better handle the stress of the day.

It also significantly improved our sleep, helping us attain more restorative sleep and stay asleep throughout the night.

Potential Uses

The Elite tincture seems best used for increasing your energy levels—and elevating your mood as a result—which is perfect for those who live an active lifestyle.

It seems to be useful for improving sleep as well.

Receptra Active Lifestyle: Pro

We tried the 1 oz, 2,000 mg Receptra Active Lifestyle: Pro extract.

receptra pro tested

Concentration and Value

Pro is the highest concentrated product offered by Receptra at 60 mg/serving and costs $0.075/mg.

The Pro tincture is probably best for those who find they need large amounts of CBD and are regular users of CBD.

You won’t find many other brands offering a tincture with such a concentration, nor at the price Receptra is asking; this is one of the most affordable highly concentrated extracts available.

Like the other 1 oz tinctures, this product is good for 33 servings.

Packaging

Identical to the other two tinctures, the Pro extract is in an amber glass bottle, has a black, child-proof dropper cap with measurement markings, and provides supplement and ingredient information.

Like with all Receptra products, a green label with the product’s batch code is attached.

Quality of Non-CBD Ingredients

The non-CBD ingredients in Pro are identical to the Elite tincture, including Hemp Seed Oil, MCT Oil, Avocado Oil, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Grapeseed Oil, Sunflower Oil, Turmeric (Curcumin), and Organic Natural Flavors.

The primary complementary ingredient to the hemp extract in this list is turmeric, which is well-known for reducing inflammation, making it perfect for a product that targets active individuals.

Scent/Flavor/Texture

Just like with the Plus and Elite tinctures, Pro has a berry/mint scent and flavor.

There is no distinguishable difference between any of the tinctures in scent, flavor, or texture.

What We Used it For

We used the Pro extract to test its effects on stress, sleep, energy levels, and our mood throughout the day.

Effectiveness

The Pro extract seemed best for improving mood, making us feel happier and more carefree.

It also helped us maintain good sleep. After not taking Pro one night during testing, one member of our team constantly woke up and had difficulty reaching deep sleep, indicating CBD was helpful for getting a good night’s rest.

Potential Uses

We believe the Pro extract is best for helping you improve your mood if you’re feeling down, and it may also help you achieve deeper sleep.

Receptra Body Butter

We tried the 3.25 oz, 400 mg Receptra Body Butter.

receptra body butter tested

Concentration and Value

The Body Butter has 123.08 mg/oz and comes in at $0.112/mg and $13.83/oz.

Although the Body Butter has 400 mg total, the concentration is actually on the low end of the spectrum, but the host of other high-quality ingredients help increase the effectiveness and potency of this product.

The Body Butter is still competitive in price, and considering the effectiveness we found, we believe you’ll think it’s worth every cent.

Packaging

This product comes in a 4 oz white, plastic jar with a white, plastic, screw-top lid.

As with the tinctures, the labeling is simple yet professional, telling you what you need to know.

The green label batch code is on the bottom of the jar.

Quality of Non-CBD Ingredients

The Body Butter includes Aloe Vera Juice, Shea Butter, Golden Jojoba Oil, Emulsifying Wax, Cetyl Stearyl Alcohol, Grapeseed Oil, MCT Oil, Coconut Oil, Shorea Butter, Mango Butter, Beeswax, St. John’s Wort Oil, Vitamin E Oil, Propylene Glycol, Diazolidinyl Urea, Camphor, Tangerine Oil, Jasmine Oil, Frankincense, Lemon Oil, Ylang-Ylang, and Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate.

That’s a long list, but they are all natural, safe, and high-quality ingredients known to possess great benefits for skin.

Scent & Texture

The Body Butter was a team favorite.

From the moment we opened the lid, we knew it was a high-quality product.

The smell was great, the most noticeable scent coming from the jasmine oil. We never noticed a hemp or “weed” smell.

The butter itself was soft, malleable, and spread easily onto our skin. It did not leave our skin feeling greasy like many other topicals can.

What We Used it For

We used the Body Butter to test its effects on dry skin, blemishes on the face, and acne.

Effectiveness

The Body Butter was an excellent moisturizer and absorbed quickly into our skin. Some members of the team found it more effective than any lotion or moisturizer they had used previously.

It also seemed to help blemishes fade and reduce inflammation from acne.

Interestingly, we also found that the jasmine scent from the Body Butter improved our mood by helping us relax.

The effects generally lasted for 3-4 hours.

Potential Uses

We believe the best uses for Receptra’s Body Butter is for moisturizing skin, removing some blemishes, and potentially for aromatherapy.

Receptra Targeted Topical

We used the 1.25 oz, 400 mg Receptra Targeted Topical.

receptra targeted topical tested

Concentration and Value

The Targeted Topical has a high concentration at 400 mg (320 mg/oz) and costs $0.10/mg.

Once again, Receptra offers a highly concentrated, affordable product.

Most topicals do not reach this kind of hemp extract count, especially in a small product.

The larger version has twice as much product and is a bit more affordable, so if you need a topical to help with pain relief, then the 2.5 oz option is worth it.

Packaging

Similar to the Body Butter, the Targeted Topical comes in a smaller, 1 oz white plastic jar with a white, plastic, screw-top lid.

The labeling is on both the lid and bottom of the jar.

The green label batch code is also on the bottom of the jar.

Quality of Non-CBD Ingredients

The Targeted Topical includes Shea Butter, Shorea Butter, Coconut Oil, Mango Butter, Beeswax, Emulsifying Wax, Jojoba Oil, Camphor, Vitamin E Oil, Arnica Oil, Jasmine, and Ylang-Ylang in addition to Hemp Extract.

These are all excellent, all-natural ingredients. The arnica oil, which may help alleviate pain and inflammation, especially complements CBD in the purpose of this product.

Scent & Texture

The Targeted Topical smells mainly like camphor, a pleasant and strong scent. Camphor is also found in Vicks Vapor Rub and contributes to its scent.

After application, the scent is not significantly noticeable.

The texture is slightly grainy, but applies smoothly onto skin and absorbs well.

What We Used it For

We used the Targeted Topical to tests its effects on relieving pain from tight and sore muscles.

Effectiveness

We put the Targeted Topical on tight muscles around the shoulders where most people carry stress. The topical significantly loosened up the muscles and relieved pain.

After leg exercises, we put the topical on calf muscles to see if it could reduce soreness. The topical subtly relieved pain for a couple of hours but did not seem to reduce recovery time significantly.

Like the Body Butter’s jasmine smell, the camphor scent from the Targeted Topical also helped us relax.

Overall, the topical seems to last for a few hours.

Potential Uses

We believe the best uses for the Targeted Topical are relaxing tight muscles and relieving pain.

Types of Products Sold by Receptra Naturals

Receptra has a small offering of products that include tinctures, topicals, a pet product, and a lip balm.

That’s just four product categories, while some brands are offering 10 or more.

Receptra has decided to stick with just a few categories to enhance the company’s ability to provide the most efficacious products possible.

“We’ve kept our product offering pretty tight, and that’s because we want to make sure everything we offer works,” said Radbill.

What seems to make Receptra’s products work particularly well is their use of the hemp flower instead of hemp stalks and seeds, which leads to more highly concentrated products.

If you compare Receptra’s product concentrations to others, you’ll find they offer much higher concentrations and doses within the same amount of oil. It’s common to find products with 250 mg of CBD in 1 oz of oil, but Receptra’s lowest dose for a 1-ounce bottle is 500 mg of CBD.

“When I see [a 1 oz product with 250 mg CBD], I wonder what else is in that bottle. What are you using to fill up that entire ounce if it’s not hemp extract?” said Radbill.

“In our case, you’re positive that everything in that bottle is an active ingredient or an ingredient that is naturally designed to enhance the effects of CBD, no fillers. We look at seeds and stalk as filler when you’re trying to extract CBD. The good stuff is in the flower.”

What’s impressive is that despite the high concentrations, Receptra has some of the most affordable products in the CBD market, and that’s by design.

“This stuff (CBD) is awesome, and it works, and the only way that people are going to believe that it works is if they’re getting a quality product and they can afford it,” said Whaley. “That’s always been our focus, high-quality, efficacious products that the customer can afford.”

Note: All of Receptra’s products are full-spectrum, which means they will likely contain trace amounts of THC, yet well within the legal limit of 0.3%. However, Receptra does provide a “broad spectrum” offering without THC by request.

Receptra Active Lifestyle: Elite (30mg/serving)

Both sizes are priced well, and considering the quality of ingredients, this is likely the best choice for most active people who want to add CBD to their regimen.

Receptra Active Lifestyle: Pro (60mg/serving)

receptra pro

Value: 1 oz/2,000 mg (33 servings): $149.95 ($0.075/mg; $149.95/oz; $4.54/serving); 2 oz/4,000 mg (67 servings): $249.95 ($0.062/mg; $124.98/oz; $3.73/serving)

Ingredients: Hemp Seed Oil, MCT Oil infused with Hemp Extract, Avocado Oil, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Grapeseed Oil, Sunflower Oil, Turmeric (Curcumin), Mint/Berry Flavor

Offering a whopping 60 mg/serving, Receptra’s Active Lifestyle: Pro extract is a no-nonsense product.

The larger Pro size tincture is the best price per mg that Receptra offers, coming in at just above 6 cents per mg. This is an extremely affordable option you likely won’t find elsewhere, at least not with the same high concentration or quality.

Lane Radbill says the Pro tincture is his favorite.

He uses the Pro in the morning to help his body get energized and wake up, while also using the Pro at night to calm his body and mind to help him sleep deeper.

If that seems odd, you’re not alone, but the science does seem to support this phenomenon. Radbill gave us a simplified, reasonable explanation as to how CBD can both provide energy and wind you down for sleep.

“CBD helps balance your body. In the morning, your body is like, ‘Alright, let’s go, let’s do it.’ So CBD helps balance you out into a high level of energy,” said Radbill. “But then later in the day, you want to start winding down, you want to go to sleep at night, so your body’s energy demand is lower, and CBD helps move that needle back down.”

Receptra Topicals

Best Use: The topical products are best for soothing muscle and joint pain, such as that caused by arthritis, as well as caring for your skin.

Conclusion

At The CBD Insider, we only recommend brands that we have thoroughly vetted and personally tested, so you can feel comfortable purchasing a company’s products.

After a comprehensive review of Receptra’s operations and testing their products, we are proud to recommend Receptra Naturals.

From their procedures to their mission, Receptra has impressed us tremendously.

Receptra’s process for creating hemp oil is excellent and clean, providing consistent products by using the best possible ingredients, following best practice protocol, and constantly testing products to ensure quality.

Besides creating some of the most affordable, high-quality CBD products on the market, the Receptra team wants to provide everyone with the opportunity to live a healthier life by educating them about the benefits of taking CBD on a daily basis.

“I think what separates this team and group of people from a lot of the other companies I’ve come across is that we’re not just peddling product,” said Kingsbury, “We’re peddling education, we’re pushing education, and we just happen to have a great product to support that education.”
