Here, we’re reviewing Hemp Health Inc.

Updated on: September 11, 2019

One of the best products at Hemp Health is the CBD Peppermint Eucalyptus Soothing Salve. Effective against ailments ranging from knee pain to bug bites, this CBD hemp salve is an excellent solution for pain and inflammation all at a competitive price.

Another one of our favorite products was the 1 oz, 550 mg spray called Hemp CBD Oral Spray Extra Strength. We found this to help calm our nerves and even helped us get to sleep faster.

Recommended product CBD Oral Spray Extra Strength

Launched in 2014 by its parent company, Mathco Health Corporation, Hemp Health is a company based in San Diego, CA that is focused on using hemp-derived CBD products to promote health and wellness.

Hemp Health has grown substantially since its inception, selling their products online and in more than 2,000 retail stores nationwide.

The company sources its hemp from prime locations such as Germany and Croatia, and mainly uses CO2 to extract the oil from the hemp, another plus.

All products are third-party tested by independent laboratories as well, primarily a local one called SD Pharm Labs. Tests are conducted with each new batch of products.

The company also sports a modern, functional site that makes it easy to find said products.

Hemp Health’s operations are up to the FDA’s standards with a Good Manufacturing Practice certification, which is held by Mathco.

Hemp Health is also a member of the National Cannabis Industry Association, one of the largest and most prestigious organizations championing cannabis.

Hemp Health Review

Certain factors can make or break a CBD brand, such as if the company grows a clean crop, or if the labeling matches what is inside the products.

At The CBD Insider, we measure the excellence of a brand by four primary criteria:

  • Where and how the company sources its crop
  • The extraction methods used
  • The extent to which their products are tested by independent, third-party laboratories
  • A current Good Manufacturing Practice certification with the FDA
Hemp Health CBD Brand Criteria

We also look at secondary factors, such as the user experience provided by the company’s website, their online consumer reviews, the organizations and groups the company is associated with, what research it conducts, and more.

Hemp Health Coupon

We’ve negotiated special deals with Hemp Health, including a 15% off coupon: INSIDER15.

Hemp Health’s Hemp Sourcing Methods

Hemp Health sources its hemp from Germany and Croatia.

Germany and Croatia are excellent locations for hemp cultivation because of Europe’s strict agricultural standards.

This is especially true in Germany.

In an article by HoneyColony, Elizabeth Moriarty, the Clinical Herbalist and Formulator at Luminary Medicine Company, said, “The German regulatory system is strict and enforced, providing confidence in the superiority of their harvest, processes, and extraction quality.”

Hemp Health’s hemp is non-GMO and is grown without using any herbicides, pesticides, or chemical fertilizers, another great plus for those trying to avoid toxins.

“We have a great relationship with our farmers, and we have great lines of communication,” said Lauren Chadwick, the Operations Manager at Mathco who oversees operations at Hemp Health. “So if there is something affecting the crops, we’re able to communicate with them so we can foresee different products in the future as well.”

Hemp Health also uses other premium ingredients in their products, such as essential oils like peppermint and eucalyptus, among others. These added ingredients come from like-minded American vendors who hold themselves to the same high standards that Hemp Health does.

Hemp Health’s CBD Extraction Methods

Hemp Health uses CO2 extraction for the majority of their products.

CO2 extraction is widely recognized as the cleanest and purest method of extracting CBD oil from hemp. Using pressure and frigid temperatures, CO2 extraction is efficient and even sanitizes the oil.

The company also uses ethanol extraction for some of its products, which is debatably not as efficient as CO2 extraction, but is generally regarded as safe by the FDA.

However, ethanol is effective for creating full-spectrum hemp extracts, which make up the majority of Hemp Health’s product line.

Third-Party Testing

Quote: "After analyzing the COAs ourselves, we firmly believe that Hemp Health's product are of the utmost quality."

SD Pharm Labs is the primary laboratory Hemp Health uses to ensure the quality of their products.

Hemp Health uses other laboratories to double-check the initial findings.

They conduct third-party laboratory tests every time a new batch of a product is ready, which happens about 2-3 times a year.

While the certificates of analysis (COAs) are not accessible on the company’s website, consumers can request a COA to check the quality of a product for themselves.

After analyzing the COAs ourselves, we firmly believe that Hemp Health’s products are of the utmost quality. The COAs also supported the company’s claims that they never use herbicides, pesticides, or chemical fertilizers.

Good Manufacturing Practice

GMP certification shows that a company meets current safety regulations and has a reliable manufacturing process.

Mathco possesses a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) certification with the FDA that covers Hemp Health.

Website

A clean, simple, and functional website are all essential aspects of providing a good user experience to online customers.

User Experience

The website is simple to navigate, and while it may not be the cleanest (some of the written content is a little redundant and unclear), you can easily find what you’re looking for.

Hemp Health also offers an educational resources page where consumers can learn about CBD so they can see if it may be right for them.

The site is well-designed for mobile as well, but there seems to be an issue with the navigation menu, which can prevent you from seeing some of the product categories.

Customer Service

Orders are processed within 48 hours and shipping takes 7-10 business days.

If you wish to return a product, you have 72 hours after delivery to make a claim. The products must return to Hemp Health within 14 days of delivery.

Hemp Health’s customer service is also friendly and informative, answering emails within 24-48 hours.

After sending in an email with a couple questions about their CBD Isolate product, we received an informative and prompt reply within that window.

Associations

Hemp Health is a member of the National Cannabis Industry Association (NCIA).

The NCIA is a non-profit trade association that helps protect the interests of cannabis businesses and promotes cannabis policy change. The association has nearly 2,000 reputable members.

“You can’t just be added into it,” said Chadwick. “So I think it shows our standing and it gives us a really good reputation.”

Online Consumer Reviews

Quote: "Several reviewers report they found relief from severe chronic pain with many of Hemp Health's products."

Less than half of the company’s products have been reviewed, but an item from each product category has been reviewed except for the CBD suppositories.

Several reviewers report they found relief from severe chronic pain with many of Hemp Health’s products. Others said they or a loved one has significantly less anxiety and can sleep better at night.

Some of the reviews also detail how CBD effectively treated a pet’s arthritis or severe epilepsy.

All reviews on the site are four stars and above.

Science and Research

While Hemp Health has not been a part of any studies, its staff are no strangers to science and are constantly looking for new ways to use CBD.

The founder of Hemp Health, Katarina Maloney, who is also the CEO of Mathco, is testing new products all the time to see what CBD can be compatible with, according to Chadwick.

Chadwick and other employees have been testing their own formulas at home, including CBD sugar scrubs and CBD-infused toothpaste.

Mathco is also planning to open a sister company to Hemp Health that will focus on skin care products infused with CBD.

The creative and innovative spirit at Hemp Health sets them apart from other companies.

Future Outlook

Quote: "It's going to be such a US commodity... I think it's going to be that daily aid that people go to."

With the possibility of full hemp legalization on the horizon, Hemp Health is excited about CBD’s potential.

So excited that they have already started talking to domestic farmers about potential partnerships.

“It will be so much nicer when we can say that everything we have is homegrown, everything is made in America,” said Chadwick. “So we’re 100% behind [hemp legalization].”

The ability to grow hemp domestically will save Hemp Health the cost of imports, and, according to Chadwick, that money will instead be used for researching hemp strains and finding the best way to grow hemp in the US.

Chadwick believes CBD could become as popular as Vitamin C in the US as a result.

“It’s going to be such a US commodity, I think it’s going to be the favorite one,” said Chadwick. “I think it’s going to be that daily aid that people go to.”

For that to happen, Chadwick hopes people will see CBD in a good light and take the time to research it.

“I don’t want it to be a blacklisted word, CBD is a great thing,” said Chadwick. “I want there to be more resources for people to be able to go and find the information they need, so that way they can see if CBD is for them.”

With such a visionary outlook and educationally-centered mindset, Hemp Health is establishing itself as a leading brand in the industry.

Best Products from Hemp Health

Before we dive into the various products offered by Hemp Health, we wanted to share a couple of the best products you’ll find at Hemp Health for common CBD uses.

Best CBD Product for Pain: CBD Peppermint Eucalyptus Hemp Soothing Salve

recommended product hemp health eucalyptus salve

Americans are dealing with pain at epidemic levels as the current opioid crisis indicates, but thankfully, products like the peppermint and eucalyptus salve exist.

This salve treated pain quickly, effectively, and for a long time. It was so potent that it’s the only treatment that has made a difference for one of our team members’ chronic knee pain.

We also found it helpful for bug bites and irritated skin with its soothing, cooling sensation.

Best CBD Product for Anxiety: CBD Hemp Oral Spray Extra Strength (1 oz. 550 mg)

Anxiety is an increasingly prevalent issue for most of society, and Hemp Health’s extra strength CBD oral spray might be the best way to fight it.

This spray provides almost 7mg of CBD per serving, and it was enough to ease some of the stress and anxiety of daily life. It seems it might be more potent for those who experience greater degrees of stress.

Hemp Health’s social media manager, Melissa Scrivnor, shared her story about how CBD has helped her chronic PTSD and major depressive disorder.

“Since I started taking CBD, I’m able to wean off of my Zoloft with approval from my psychiatrist,” said Scrivnor.

Best CBD Product for Inflammation: Hemp CBD Body Balm (Vanilla Coconut) & Hemp CBD Isolate

If you deal with inflammation in any form, both the CBD Isolate and a topical could prove useful.

The vanilla coconut topical, with 25 mg of CBD isolate added to it, significantly reduced bloating and abdominal inflammation in the brother of one of our team members.

The topical worked within five minutes and reduced his discomfort almost immediately.

Hemp Health Product Reviews

We try products to ensure they are made just like a company says and to help you make the best purchasing decisions.

Our team decided to test seven products from Hemp Health:

  • Hemp CBD Isolate
  • Hemp CBD Oral Spray/Tincture Extra Strength (550 mg & 1,100 mg)
  • CBD Topicals (Peppermint Eucalyptus Soothing Salve & Vanilla Coconut and Ginger Honey Body Balms)
  • CBD Peanut Butter

Why We Chose These Products

The products we decided to test allowed us to try some of the most common ways people take CBD, allowing us to easily compare Hemp Health’s products to other brands. These products also represented several of the categories within Hemp Health’s product selection.

Overview of CBD products we tested at hemp health

Hemp CBD Isolate

CBD Hemp Powder Isolate
learn more about Hemp Powder CBD Isolate

We used the 1 gram CBD isolate, which contains about 900-1,000 mg of pure CBD.

Concentration and Value

At approximately $0.08/mg ($79.98), the 1 gram CBD isolate is a little pricey compared to some isolates from other brands. You get what you pay for though, which is a high-quality, pure product.

Inherent in its form, you decide how long the isolate will last you by choosing your frequency of use and dosing sizes. We used 20-25mg/serving, which would provide a total of about 40-50 servings.

Packaging

This product comes in a plastic package encasing the glass isolate container, which is slightly larger than the size of a quarter. The cap unscrews from the container to reveal the crystalized CBD.

Scent/Flavor/Texture

The isolate has no scent or flavor.

As for texture, if you put it in your mouth, it tends to clump but will eventually dissolve. After putting it in one of the topicals, you can feel tiny granules for a moment as you apply the topical, but those too eventually dissolve.

What We Used it For

We used CBD isolate to test its effects on inflammation, emotional well-being, and energy levels. We took the isolate orally and added it to beverages and the Hemp Health topicals.

Effectiveness

One member of our team had his brother try the isolate in one of the topicals to help reduce bloating.

After putting some of the isolate in one of the topicals to enhance the CBD concentration, the brother said his abdomen began to relax within five minutes of applying. The bloating stopped and eventually subsided.

While the topical may have played the largest role in reducing the bloating, the isolate seems to have helped as well.

Taking the isolate orally seemed to provide a boost of energy and helped us get through mid-afternoon fatigue.

Potential Uses

After trying the isolate, we think it could be potentially useful for reducing inflammation and providing an energy boost.

With so many ways to use CBD Isolate, such as putting in food or drink, mixing it in topicals, adding it to sprays and tinctures, it’s easy to make it a daily dietary supplement.

Hemp CBD Oral Spray/Tincture Extra Strength

Hemp CBD Oral Spray and Tincture Extra Strength
learn more about CBD Oil Spray

We tested both of the extra strength, vegetable glycerine-based CBD sprays (550 mg and 1,100 mg).

Concentration & Value

The 550 mg spray provides 6.87mg/serving and is $0.10/mg ($54.98) while the 1,100 mg spray provides 13.75mg/serving and is $0.087/mg ($95.98), so the higher concentration is a slightly better value for double the dose.

However, the 550 mg spray is more versatile in its use. Since each serving is two pumps, you can use only one pump to take a small dose or take a couple of extra pumps to reach a dose as high as the 1,100 mg spray.

Packaging

The bottles are made of amber glass, protecting the contents from being altered or spoiled by UV rays, a major plus if you happen to leave your bottle exposed to sunlight.

The spray pump worked easily and consistently produced the same amount of product every time. A clear plastic cap covers the pump.

The vegetable glycerine sprays have attractive green and white labeling, compared to the all-natural formula labels, which are green and brown.

Quality of Non-CBD Ingredients

The sprays contain VG (Vegetable Glycerine), Hemp Oil with Cannabinoids, Purified Water, Stevia, Sunflower Lecithin, and Proprietary Homeopathic and Flower Essence Blend.

Vegetable glycerine and stevia are healthy sweeteners. The proprietary homeopathic and flower essence blends includes terpenes from the hemp plant and other high-quality essential oils.

These are all food-grade ingredients that score highly on the health scale.

Scent/Flavor/Texture

The smell from the sprays is faint and completely unnoticeable if the cap is on.

The flavor is tolerable, and if the oil is under the tongue as directed, it’s hardly noticeable. The best way to describe the flavor is probably like tasting a sweet leaf. There was no aftertaste for us.

The texture is a little thicker than water.

What We Used it For

We used extra strength sprays to see if it affected our energy levels, ability to sleep, and for anxiety.

Effectiveness

The most effective use we found for the spray was helping us feel ready for bed. We noticed that we fell asleep faster after taking a serving in the evening.

The spray also seemed mildly helpful for anxiety. One of our team members’ mother used the 1,100 mg spray in the mornings before she faced the numerous tasks in her day, and she noticed a slight reduction in her anxiety.

Chadwick told us a story about how she has creatively used the sprays.

After having elbow surgery, she used them topically to heal a scar on her elbow from surgery. Since then, she’s used the topicals to help with pain.

“My doctor and PT are both astonished by how quickly it’s healing and my progress,” said Chadwick.

We did not notice a significant difference between the two concentrations.

Potential Uses

The potential uses of the extra strength sprays include managing inflammation, falling asleep faster, easing anxiety, and apparently healing scars.

Chadwick’s story shows that the sprays have other forms of administration than just oral consumption. You can use them topically, add them to your morning coffee or tea, or put them in food.

Recommended CBD product: CBD Oral Spray Extra Strength

CBD Topicals

We tried all three of Hemp Health’s CBD topicals: CBD Peppermint Eucalyptus, Vanilla Coconut, and Ginger Honey. Each topical comes in a 1 oz jar with 150 mg of CBD.

CBD Body Balm

learn more about CBD Body Balm

Concentration & Value

Each salve is approximately $0.20/mg ($29.98), which is on the more expensive side of the spectrum.

The concentration is decent, containing about 5.5 mg of CBD per gram of salve (i.e., 28.38 grams of salve per 1 oz jar). While that may seem low, in conjunction with the other great ingredients, these salves are packed with potency.

Packaging

The topicals come in 1 oz, clear glass jars with black lids.

The packaging for each is appealing. The Vanilla Coconut and Ginger Honey labels are warm and inviting, perfectly matching how the salves themselves smell and feel.

Quality of Non-CBD Ingredients

All of the topicals include Coconut Oil, Beeswax, CBD Hemp Oil, and Arnica Oil. Peppermint and eucalyptus are added to the Soothing Salve. Vanilla and ginger essential oils are in the Ginger Honey Body Balm while vanilla and coconut fragrance are added to the Vanilla Coconut Body Balm.

These all-natural ingredients are excellent and possess similar health benefits (e.g., reducing inflammation), which seems to contribute to the effectiveness of the topicals.

Scent & Texture

Each salve has a potent, yet not overbearing scent that we loved. It was a good thing we loved them because the scents can last for several hours.

Peppermint Eucalyptus smells like menthol and eucalyptus, very reminiscent of a Vicks Vaporub. The salve is quite firm, so it takes a moment of warming it with your finger to make it applicable.

Ginger Honey smells most likely ginger with a slight hint of vanilla. This salve was not as firm as the Peppermint Eucalyptus, but it required a little warming for the first use.

Vanilla Coconut was the favorite scent of most of those who tried the topicals. This is by far the softest salve, as it was smooth and easy to apply from the beginning.

What We Used it For

We used the Peppermint Eucalyptus salve for everything: moisturizing, inflammation, chronic pain, bug bites, post-workout recovery, and even acne (CBD has been shown to help reduce sebum and inflammation in acne).

The body balms were used for skincare, moisturizing, inflammation, and acne.

Effectiveness

Overall, the salves were quick-acting, and their effects lasted for hours.

Peppermint Eucalyptus was effective in almost all of the uses we put it through.

One of our team members has chronic knee pain and has not found any relief with other treatments. However, the Peppermint Eucalyptus salve made a significant difference for him.

We found it useful for soothing sore muscles and tendons after exercise.

It immediately relieved the itch from bug bites with its cooling sensation, even helping the bites heal faster.

Peppermint Eucalyptus has also helped Chadwick reduce the pain and aches from her elbow surgery, enhancing her recovery.

Recommended CBD product: CBD Peppermint Eucalyptus Soothing Salve

The only use that this salve was mostly ineffective for was acne. It seemed to reduce inflammation slightly in some areas, but any other benefits were mostly insignificant.

The body balms helped heal our skin, helping dry, irritated skin feel moisturized again.

As told above in our review of the isolate, the body balms also seemed to help reduce bloating.

A brother of one of our team members has a gastrointestinal issue that has not been helped by several treatments. However, within just a few minutes of application, his bloating began to subside, and his abdomen relaxed.

Potential Uses

The potential uses of these topicals are nearly limitless.

We found that they were most effective in reducing pain and inflammation, healing dry and damaged skin, soothing bug bites, and enhancing post-workout recovery.

Also, don’t be afraid to add some CBD isolate to a topical as well if you ever need something a little stronger. The isolate mixes quite well with the topicals.

CBD Peanut Butter Edible

We decided to try the 6 oz, 500 mg CBD Peanut Butter over the CBD Honey.

Edible CBD Peanut Butter
learn more about CBD peanut butter

Concentration and Value

With 500 mg of CBD and 12 tablespoon servings, you can expect to get about 42 mg with each serving, which should be plenty to supplement your diet.

This product clocks in at about $0.10/mg ($49.99) of CBD and $8.33 per ounce. It’s affordable, but you certainly pay for the high concentration.

It’s one of the only CBD-infused peanut butter products in existence online, and it’s least expensive on the Hemp Health site.

Packaging

The peanut butter comes in a small, dark container with peanut-colored labeling and a black, screw-top cap, perfect for discreet use on the go.

Quality of Non-CBD Ingredients

The ingredients include Peanuts, Hemp CBD Oil, Corn Syrup Solids, Sugar, Soy Protein, Fully Hydrogenated Vegetable Oils, Molasses, contains 2% or less of Salt.

Most of these ingredients are fine and organic, but there is added sugar (i.e., corn syrup, sugar, molasses), likely to help cover any potential hemp taste. While there isn’t much of it, if you’re looking to limit added sugars in your diet, you may want to find a different way to take CBD.

Scent/Flavor/Texture

The smell and flavor don’t seem to differ from regular peanut butter, and it goes well with everything peanut butter does.

It has a smooth texture, making it easy enough to spread on bread or mix in with food like oatmeal.

What We Used it For

We ate it straight as a snack, spread it on bread, and put it in a smoothie.

We also used it early in the day to see if it might help provide a boost of energy to our morning.

Effectiveness

To some extent, we think the CBD peanut butter gave us some extra energy to face the day.

Potential Uses

It’s not any different from actual peanut butter, so it can be used just as creatively as your average jar of JIF in the pantry.

If you’re looking for ideas, put it in a protein smoothie, use it as a snack when in need of some energy, or use it with a banana, apple slices, and on toast.

Hemp CBD Oil Capsules

We also tried the 25 mg/30 ct Hemp CBD Oil Capsules.

highlights of hemp cbd oil capsules from hemp health
learn more about hemp cbd oil capsules

Concentration and Value

A bottle of these full-spectrum capsules contains 30 servings with 25 mg of CBD per capsule.

The certificate of analysis for the batch of our product showed each capsule had 35 mg of CBD with 1 mg of THC, which is a significant increase from the advertised cannabinoid content. We’re not complaining though.

The cost clocks in at $0.09/mg ($66.99) for the advertised amount of CBD, which is competitive in the CBD capsule market.

However, our bottle slashed that price down to roughly $0.06/mg because of the extra CBD. A price like that is nearly unbeatable for not only capsules but also most CBD products.

For the advertised concentration and value, Hemp Health offers a standard dosage and serving size alongside a competitive price.

Packaging

The bottle is made of amber glass and is capped by a black, screw-top lid.

The label contains directions for use, an ingredients list, and serving size information.

Hemp Health’s capsules can be taken apart and poured onto food or anything else.

Quality of Non-CBD Ingredients

The non-CBD ingredients are Silica and Vegetable Magnesium Stearate, both of which are non-GMO, vegan, and kosher.

Silica and vegetable magnesium stearate are used as “flow agents,” preventing the contents from sticking together and ensuring the quality of the capsules.

Scent and Flavor

There is no noticeable scent or flavor with the capsules.

What We Used it For

We tested the capsules’ effects on anxiety and stress, energy, and sleep.

Generally, we took one capsule in the morning and one at night. Sometimes, we took two capsules in the afternoon or evening.

Effectiveness

Most noticeably, the capsules gave us energy and focus. This allowed us to be more productive throughout our day.

We also noticed a sense of calm and relaxation from the capsules.

The effects generally lasted around four hours.

Potential Uses

We believe the capsules are best for increasing your focus, boosting productivity, and relieving anxiety.

Types of Products Sold

Hemp Health offers a wide variety of products from basic capsules to freeze-dried, CBD-infused treats for your pet. All of Hemp Health’s products are full-spectrum, except for their Hemp CBD Isolate.

Some products may contain minimal traces of THC but are well within the legal limit of 0.03%.

Hemp Health’s CBD Isolate is a quality product that is CO2 extracted from well-sourced hemp. You do pay handsomely for the quality, as a quick Google search of other CBD isolates shows. Although this is one of the more expensive isolates on the market, the peace of mind in Hemp Health’s product quality makes the price worth it.

This isolate is a crystallized form of 95-99% pure CBD, yet it also contains some terpenes.

Hemp CBD Capsules

Best Uses: Hemp Health’s capsules are best for reducing and managing internal inflammation, perhaps with inflammatory bowel disorders like Crohn’s disease.

Hemp CBD Pet Health

Hemp Health loves pets and has even donated to some animal rescue groups.

“CBD is a great use for pets,” said Chadwick. “So we definitely back that 100% because we want especially animals to be able to have this.”

Hemp Health offers four selections of CBD-infused treats and a variety of tinctures for pets.

Best Uses: The CBD-infused treats and CBD hemp oil tinctures are best used to support the endocannabinoid system of an animal. Just like humans, animals also have this all-important system that allows them to experience the benefits of CBD and help bring their bodies back into balance.

Some reviewers noted that the CBD products significantly reduced seizures and effectively treated arthritis in their pets.
