FAB CBD Review: Is FAB CBD Worth It?

Avatar for CBD Editorial Team

Table of Contents

After speaking with FAB CBD founder Josh Delaney, sampling several of the brand’s CBD products, and nosing around their operations as much as they would let us (which was a lot), the CBDI editorial team has arrived at an overall rating of 90/100 for the brand.

What stuck out to us the most from the process was FAB CBD’s commitment to supplement-style formulation, CBD or no CBD.

If you’re looking for a highly synergistic CBD product that doesn’t skimp on supporting nutrients, CBD concentration, or “minor cannabinoids” like so many of the other guys, FAB’s CBD Salve is a great place to start.

Now onto our official FAB CBD review.

FAB CBD Recommended Products

FAB CBD Topical Cream

Where other creams drip and run, FAB CBD’s Topical Cream stays non-greasy well after applying.

It smells great, comes in a decently high potency, and can target those stubborn areas of discomfort.

FAB CBD Nighttime Chews

Not content to coast on the melatonin train as so many others do, FAB also fortified this hemp gummy with L-Theanine, GABA, and 5-HTP.

They taste great, work effectively, and the added sugar content is below the norm.

FAB CBD Full-Spectrum CBD Oil Tincture

We really enjoyed the more subtle flavor of this cannabinoid-rich, full-spectrum tincture.

Our team noted consistent improvements in stress and discomfort for several hours after each dose of 60-80 milligrams.

How FAB CBD Got Started

According to founder Josh Delaney, timing was key to FAB CBD’s early and continued success.

In 2017, Delaney was approached by a friend seeking a partner for his newly established CBD business, but he declined the offer.

Still, Delaney took note of CBD’s potential at that time, and his interest grew as he used his extensive ecommerce and supplement industry background to informally consult for his friend.

He established FAB CBD that same year (2017), which, according to Delaney, was a well-timed maneuver because the real CBD “boom” came about a year and a half later (2019).

By this time, FAB CBD was already disrupting the market; a sizable crop of committed customers already knew who they were, and it would only climb from there.

In 2021, FAB sold to Canada’s number one cannabis retailer, High Tide, who then went on to acquire Nuleaf Naturals that November.

What Makes FAB CBD Unique?

The first of several differentiators is the brand’s simple and lighthearted labeling.

“You don’t go to a protein supplement website and see pictures of cows,” Delaney offered wittily when explaining why FAB CBD steers around overly technical “back-end” concepts on already tiny product labels.

Of course, FAB CBD maintains full transparency with customers by providing certificates of analysis for their products, all while keeping the upfront messages succinct.

Another key differentiator is FAB’s consistent use of a proprietary strain of hemp in all their products.

Where many companies will bulk-source their hemp from a scattered group of farms, resulting in regular variations of taste, texture, and potency (all of which slip right by third-party lab testing), FAB CBD has been sourcing the same proprietary strain since day one.

Per Delaney, “Buy the exact same bottle from the same company next week, and it could be coming from a completely different state in a completely different form. It could be treated with a completely different water filtration system. It may even be processed by a different company with a different ethanol source.”

Finally, and this is admittedly being highlighted out of our editorial team’s growing exasperation with competitors’ topicals, FAB CBD actually has a 1000mg/oz CBD topical, dwarfing just about everybody else on concentration alone, not to mention the savvy application of functional ingredients.

Our FAB CBD Review

To provide our audience with as comprehensive a review as possible, we dive much deeper than the marketing copy and the price tags, which requires a bit of legwork.

Over a period of several weeks, we interview brand leadership, sample products, and perform our own critical assessments of everything from the CBD brand’s site to their product packaging.

All of this data is then applied to a 27-factor rating scale, which our editorial team convenes over to assign points.

Here are the six major categories under which these factors are listed and scored:

  • Quality
  • Transparency
  • Website Experience
  • Customer Service
  • Value
  • Brand Value

As usual, we’ll start our FAB CBD review with quality.

Quality

Max score: 35 points
FAB CBD score: 33.75 points

In addition to simply observing end product quality, the manner in which a product is sourced, extracted, and packaged are all fair game for this metric, because all of these factors and more matter to the consumer.

Here’s how FAB CBD’s products stack up in terms of overall quality, including testing and certification, manufacturing processes, and more.

Product Quality

All of FAB’s CBD products come in durable and well-designed packaging/containers that make efficient use of labeling space.

The gummies use real sugar, the all-organic topicals use no harsh surfactants or preservatives, and regardless of category, many products reflected Delaney’s comments on the commitment to create well-rounded supplements, CBD or not.

For example, the use of organic turmeric, L-theanine, Ashwagandha, and other functional ingredients make a strong case for the therapeutic and potentially synergistic benefits of FAB CBD products outside of the CBD content.

Products are sourced from Colorado farms using USDA Organic methods.

All three of the major formulation archetypes we want to see (some form of “relief,” “relax,” and “active”) are represented, but we applied a small deduction for some of these products only being available in one form (e.g., topical only, tincture only, etc.).

Finally, full-spectrum hemp extracts make a solid showing throughout multiple product types, and the broad-spectrum crowd is done justice with more than just one or two products, so we award full credit for extract availability.

Testing and Certification

FAB sends their products to ProVerde, a reputable third-party lab that conducts full-panel testing on each batch, meaning they measure for cannabinoid content/density, residual solvents, pesticides, microbes, and more.

Given that FAB is still coming out of a bit of a transitory state, having recently acquired Nuleaf Naturals, their certifications are still in the works, but as Founder Josh explained, their USDA Organic, NSF, and cGMP (Nuleaf) will be official in the coming months.

Extraction Method

FAB uses CO2 to efficiently and safely draw their extracts from the hemp plant biomass.

By most accounts, CO2 is considered tied with ethanol as the industry gold standard for a safe solvent.

Transparency

Max score: 12.5 points
FAB CBD score: 9.25 points

Key to building trust with customers, potential partners, and any other interested parties is openly sharing key insights about your production, sourcing, and other factors affecting product quality and safety.

FAB makes a strong overall effort in this regard, but they could stand to improve on a few points.

Info Accessibility

In less than a few clicks, casual site visitors and shoppers alike can quickly glean the basics as it regards FAB’s consumer-first philosophy, their (almost vertical) supply chain structure, the natural plant extracts and ingredients they use, and more.

Learning about the brand and the people behind it is equally as easy on the FAB site, and though we came away from FAB’s Our Mission page with a fairly well-formed impression of the brand, we like to see more objective information/milestones presented as part of a chronologically flowing story (establishment date, acquisitions and new product line launches, etc.)

As mentioned, the greatest issue we came across in the transparency department involves how FAB displays their third-party lab reports—they only show reports for the most recent batch, which is a serious issue considering CBD products have a fairly long shelf life in many cases.

Because ProVerde is a reputable third-party lab, and because FAB makes it easy to access lab reports with packaging-mounted QR codes, the deduction was not as large as it could have been.

Supply Chain Transparency

Between the FAQ and blog posts on the site and what FAB Founder Josh Delaney personally shared with us, we were able to glean the major points in the FAB supply chain, which include sourcing from Colorado farms, manufacturing/extracting/processing in a Denver facility, and warehousing in Wisconsin.

Website Experience

Max score: 7.5 points
FAB CBD score: 7.25 points

Were we artists or architects, things would be different, but given our purposes as hemp industry reviewers, site design takes a back seat to beginner-friendly content and e-commerce functionality, so long as the design is at least non-distracting.

Product Navigation and Purchasing

Simply put, there wasn’t a single hitch in the browsing and shopping experience that broke the immersion or otherwise harmed the experience for us.

The e-commerce section is tidy and attractive, featuring helpful filters, and we like how you can change the concentration on products (and see the resulting change in price) before clicking through to the individual product pages.

The site displayed just as effectively on mobile devices as it did on our PCs.

Site Content

Between the fairly well-populated blog, FAQ page, and the product descriptions themselves, CBD newbies should have little trouble piecing together the basics when it comes to what you’re looking for in a high-quality hemp product (extraction method, extract type, cannabinoid potency, etc).

That said, we do like to see this information centralized and clearly articulated in one easily accessible “CBD 101” page.

Customer Service

Max score: 10 points
FAB CBD score: 9.75 points

We’re customers too, and thanks to the secret nature of our customer service call-ins, we can get a very accurate reflection of how accommodating and responsive each brand is when it comes to customer service inquiries or issues.

Along with the shipping/return policies and the breadth of available support services, these two factors—responsiveness and accommodation level—drive our scoring rationale here.

Contact Options and Responsiveness

FAB offers chat, email, and phone support services, which is our standard for an automatic 100 for breadth of services offered.

They also ace responsiveness, as all three of these services provided prompt and accommodating answers that directly addressed our questions.

Shipping and Return Policies

Standard shipping costs a reasonable $5.99 (5-7 business days quoted), expedited is $9.97, and FAB offers free shipping on orders over $99.

Customers have 30 days from purchasing to contact FAB for a full refund, and if it was FAB’s mistake, they will refund the shipping fee also.

Value

Max score: 10 points
FAB CBD score: 6.78 points

We weigh the raw price-per-milligram (of CBD) against the ingredient quality relative to that price when assessing the value that each CBD brand brings to the table.

At 8.5 cents per milligram—referencing their 1200mg CBD Oil, which costs $99, FAB scores low for raw price, as many high-quality competitors stay below 6 or even 5 cents a milligram.

However, because of their generous and adept use of more than a few botanical enhancers, their sourcing and testing standards, and their “complete cannabinoid” product featuring a 1:1:1:1 ratio of major cannabinoids, they scored very near to the top for ingredient quality relative to price.

The general consensus among our team on the value front is that FAB charges a medium-sized, but justifiable premium.

Brand Value

Max score: 25 points
FAB CBD score: 23.13 points

Finally, the kaleidoscopic endeavor of gauging a brand’s overall impact on their industry as well as any contributions they’ve made outside of the industry requires us to consider several factors, including, but not limited to the following:

  • Product Innovation
  • Community/Industry Involvement
  • Participation In Medical Studies
  • Legislative Activism
  • Institutional Knowledge
  • Philanthropy/Charity

It’s difficult to deny that FAB has exerted a significant influence over the hemp industry, both for their sheer size as well as their complete cannabinoid product, gummies and tinctures that read almost like nutrition supplements, and other innovations they continue to produce.

On both the industry involvement and legislative activism side, their US Hemp Roundtable membership signals an active commitment to not just watching, but improving the state of the industry for consumers and their own brand alike.

Finally, FAB is among the more generous of CBD brands when it comes to charity, which they consistently engage in every quarter, including planting over 1,000 trees for Arbor Day 2021, partnering with Operation Underground Railroad to prevent sex trafficking, donating to the Wisconsin Veterans Chamber, and many more efforts you can learn about through the above link.

Our FAB CBD Overall Rating

After factoring in all of the above, FAB receives an overall rating of 90/100.

Their score is a well-balanced one, as no category received more than small-to-moderate deductions, and we have no major red flags to caution prospective customers about.

The product quality and innovation, certification and testing standards, customer service, and website experience are all befitting a top-tier brand.

That said, the one issue we do hope to see resolved soon requires a simple and more logistical fix: posting all third-party lab reports for customers to see, not just the most recent batch.

Though FAB CBD holds up on paper, can they provide an above-average use experience?

Our review team sampled several products ourselves to find out.

FAB Full-Spectrum CBD Oil Review
photo

Concentration

FAB’s full-spectrum CBD oil tinctures are offered in the following concentrations:

  • 300mg/30ml
  • 600mg/30ml
  • 1200mg/30ml (our sample)
  • 2400mg/30ml

Here is the cannabinoid breakdown for our 1200mg CBD oil tincture, according to the certificate of analysis for our product batch:

  • CBD: 44.7mg/ml (1,341mg total)
  • D9-THC: 1.93mg/ml (57.9mg total)
  • CBG: 0.425mg/ml (12.75mg total)
  • CBC: 1.18mg/ml (35.4mg total)
  • CBN: 0.163mg/ml (4.89mg total)

The CBD is generously (almost problematically) over-delivered, the THC stays well within the legal limit, and all totaled, the non-CBD cannabinoid concentration is about 8% of the CBD content, which is above average.

Value

Here are the prices for the available concentrations of FAB’s full-spectrum CBD oil tincture:

  • 300mg: $39 ($0.13/mg)
  • 600mg: $59 ($0.10/mg)
  • 1200mg: $99 ($0.08/mg)
  • 2400mg: $129 ($0.05/mg)

As mentioned in the brand review section, we see medium-sized premiums that slim up toward higher concentrations, but FAB’s argument is strong considering the overall quality.

Packaging

Our tinctures came in darkly tinted bottles (in boxes) complete with matte white dropper lids.

The bottles and dropper lids worked effectively and maintained their durability throughout our use of the product, and everything we wanted to see was represented on labels, including:

  • Concentration and ingredients
  • Use instructions
  • Certifications
  • A “Why FAB CBD?” blurb

Finally, both the box and the bottle contained QR codes for easy access to lab reports.

Overall, it’s top marks for high quality and informative packaging.

Ingredients

Here are the ingredients for the (citrus) tincture we tried:

Fractionated Coconut Oil, Sunflower Seed Oil, Natural Flavors

The ingredient list is the same for all of the other flavors (natural, mint, vanilla, berry), with the exception of the addition of stevia for the vanilla flavor.

Though this tincture isn’t among the more botanically enhanced products in the FAB catalog, the cannabinoids therein, the high-quality carrier oil, and the lack of artificial additives or sweeteners makes for an easy ace.

Taste

The citrus taste of the tincture we sampled was very mild, coming nowhere near the “pucker” threshold associated with the acidic bite of pure citrus.

Because we are very used to and fond of the natural hemp flavor, which came through almost undeterred in this case, we didn’t mind it.

However, for anyone looking for a flavor that masks the natural bitterness of the hemp, the citrus is probably not going to get the job done.

Overall, the flavor was very pleasant, and though it loses the battle on the front end, the citrus was more effective in covering up the hemp aftertaste.

Effectiveness

FAB set the full-spectrum hemp up with a carrier oil and a bit of flavoring, then wisely got out of the way, allowing the CBD and partnering cannabinoids to ease discomfort and stress effectively.

Our results were consistent with most high-quality full-spectrum CBD products, including a steady decrease in stress and discomfort that didn’t enter “groggy” territory at any point.

Two droppers full (80mg of CBD) was the sweet spot for potency and duration of these benefits, often taking us through more than half a workday before we noticed them wearing off.

Pros and Cons

Let’s start with the pros:

  • Effective for stress and discomfort
  • Strong supporting cannabinoids

And now the cons:

  • Citrus doesn’t cover up hemp flavor
  • No non-hemp botanical enhancers

FAB Topical Cream Review
photo

Concentration

FAB CBD’s Topical CBD Cream is available in a 600mg/2oz concentration.

Here is the cannabinoid breakdown for our sample based on the certificate of analysis for our product batch:

  • CBD: 12.3mg/g (688.8mg total)
  • D9-THC: 0.522mg/g (29.23mg total
  • CBG: 0.124mg/g (6.94mg total)
  • CBC: 0.320mg/g (17.92mg total)

The CBD content is once again overshot, but not by a concerning amount, and the D9-THC amount is well within the legal limit of 0.3% by dry weight.

Finally, the non-CBD cannabinoid content is almost 8% of the CBD content, which is moderately above average.

Value

The topical costs $49, which reduces to $0.08/mg.

Considering the product type (topicals generally run more expensive than tinctures) and the ingredient quality as listed below, we’re considering this a moderately competitive price point.

Like all of FAB’s products, the cream is eligible for subscription savings, which provide a consistent 20% discount.

Packaging

The cream comes in a darkly tinted tub (in a box) with a white threaded lid.

Between the box and the tub, both have understandably limited labeling space, we were still able to see all the certifications, ingredients, use instructions, and the blurb entitled “Why Fab?” squeezed its way on efficiently.

Overall, the packaging was of high quality, holding up throughout our use of the product.

Ingredients

Here is the ingredient list for the Tropical Cream:

Aloe Vera Leaf Extract, Distilled Water, Cocoa Butter, Coconut Oil, Olive Oil, Cetearyl Alcohol, Polysorbate 60, Optiphen Plus, CO2 Extracted Hemp Oil (Aerial Plant Parts), Chamomile, Vitamin E, Citric Acid, Potassium Sorbate, Cinnamon, Blood Orange Essential Oil

Though we’re compelled to call out a lack of natural plant extracts as compared to many other leading CBD topicals (some containing more than a dozen), this is partially redeemed by high quality ingredients and the always-savvy vitamin E play.

Scent and Texture

The blood orange and cinnamon dominate the smell, which is a very pleasant blend between the two, reminiscent of a hot wintertime drink (despite the “tropical” angle).

We were equally impressed by the texture, which was light and non-greasy as advertised.

Indeed, it went on very smoothly without dripping or running at any point.

Overall, an excellent impression on the scent and texture front.

Effectiveness

If you’re looking for something a little more fast-acting and/or hard-hitting in the short-term as far as discomfort relief goes, this non-mentholated topical may miss the mark because of the lack of numbing/tingling action.

However, in more of an “ongoing maintenance” sense, rather than dealing with more acute sources of intense discomfort, we noticed the discomfort relief lasted longer than most topicals, often as long as 5-6 hours.

As an added benefit for CBD newbies looking to clearly gauge the effects of their topical product for dosage planning purposes, it was much easier to tell when this product was “kicking in” because we didn’t have to measure it against the numbness.

Overall, this topic was highly effective in the more delayed, but sustained relief scenario.

Pros and Cons

Let’s start with the pros:

  • Effective for mild to moderate discomfort
  • Smells excellent
  • Goes on smoothly with no greasy mess

And now the cons:

  • Fewer natural plant extracts than most
  • No numbness/tingling action

FAB Chews Review
photo

Concentration

Both of FAB’s gummy products—Anytime Chews and Nighttime Chews—provide 750mg CBD per container, but in different denominations.

The Anytime Chews, which we sampled, come in a 30-count tub of 25mg gummies, and the Nighttime Chews come in a 60-count tub of 12.5mg gummies.

Per the certificate of analysis for our Anytime Chews, each gummy contains 20.9 mg of CBD and no other cannabinoids (above the measurable threshold).

This is less impressive than the other FAB products we’ve reviewed, as the CBD is significantly under-delivered and the lack of supporting cannabinoids weakens the therapeutic potential.

Value

The Anytime Gummies cost $59 ($0.08/mg), and the Nighttime Gummies cost $89 (0.12/mg).

As CBD gummies go (most are around $0.06-$0.12/mg), the Anytime Gummies are not unreasonably priced, though we would like to see at least one enhancer beyond the CBD at this price point.

The Nighttime Gummies, which contain L-theanine, 5-HTP, Melatonin, Ashwagandha, and GABA (that’s more like it), make a strong argument for the price hike.

Overall, we’re considering both price points moderately competitive.

Packaging

Our Anytime Chews came in a darkly tinted tub (in a box) with a matte white threaded lid.

Between the box and the tub, we had quick access to basic product information (concentration, flavor, etc.), use instructions, a long list of “free statements” (peanut free, dairy free, etc.), a “Why FAB CBD?” blurb, and QR codes for access to lab reports.

Neither the box nor the container material were flimsy, and everything held up throughout our use of the products—top marks for packaging quality.

Ingredients

Here is the ingredient list for our Anytime Gummies:

Cannabidiol (CBD) from Hemp Extract (Aerial Plant Parts), Organic Cane Sugar, Organic Tapioca Syrup, Organic Grape Juice Concentrate, Pectin, Citric Acid, Ascorbic Acid, Colors Added (Black Carrot Juice Concentrate, Organic Turmeric, Organic Annatto), Natural Flavors.

And here is the ingredient list for the PM chews:

Broad-Spectrum CBD Distillate, L-Theanine, 5-HTP, Melatonin, Ashwagandha, GABA, Sugar, Tapioca Syrup, Pectin, Sodium Citrate, Citric Acid, Natural Flavor, Beet Juice.

Added sugar stays at or below 2mg in both cases, artificial additives are slim to none, and we see a potentially powerful synergy of functional ingredients in the PM Chews.

Overall, a strong showing on the ingredients front with the exception of enhancers for the Anytime Chews.

Taste

The fruity flavor of our Anytime Chews was very enjoyable, especially considering the below-average amount of added sugar (1mg) per gummy.

It wasn’t too sweet or bitter, and most importantly, we didn’t get that syrupy and/or artificial taste known to less conscientiously sweetened products like non-CBD gummies, candy bars, etc.

Though we’ve had gummies that disguised the bitter hemp flavor a bit more effectively, for those averse to the hemp taste, the Anytime Chews still do a fairly good job of masking it on the front end (aftertaste is a different story).

Effectiveness

The Anytime Chews promoted a markedly less potent (than the full–spectrum tincture), but still noticeable sense of calm that lasted a couple hours after taking 2-3 of them (50-75mg).

We didn’t notice an improvement in physical discomfort.

Overall, these results are clear reflections of the differences in extract type, i.e., the lack of THC as compared to the full-spectrum products we tried.

Pros and Cons

Let’s start with the pros:

  • Very tasty
  • Effective for promoting calm
  • Only 1mg of sugar per gummy

And now the cons:

  • Not as effective as full-spectrum
  • Fewer botanical enhancers in ingredients

CBD Topicals

FAB offers both a topical CBD cream and a CBD salve.

We found the topical CBD cream to be effective in relieving discomfort for longer than most other CBD topical formulations we have tried, and the scent and texture are superior.

CBD topicals in general are preferred by people looking to address specific areas of tissue discomfort, but this targeting benefit is offset by much trickier dosage measuring.

Conclusion

In our personal experiences with various members of the FAB team as well as our experiences with the products, we are left with an overwhelmingly positive impression of the company, which is aptly reflected in their score of 90/100.

They make supplement-grade CBD products backed by a reputable third-party lab, and follow highly responsible sourcing and manufacturing standards.

Their products taste (and smell) excellent, and were consistently effective in reducing stress and discomfort, with broad-spectrum products noticeably lagging a bit in potency as they usually do.

We’d like to see more transparency on the test reporting end and a bit more exploration into botanically enhanced CBD products in the future, but we will continue to recommend FAB CBD products in their current forms to anyone looking for a safe and effective CBD product.
