Our review of Select CBD’s Muscle Rub goes in-depth into every detail of this CBD topical. Select CBD is a premium CBD brand known primarily for its excellent vape pens, but the brand has expanded its excellence into other product varieties. We were impressed by how effective the Muscle Rub was, especially at such an affordable price. With that kind of combination, this is a topical that’s hard to pass up.
Here are some highlights from the Muscle Rub:
Note: As of late August 2019, Select CBD has undergone a name change to become Social CBD. In an email sent to customers, Select CBD said, “Don’t worry, every reason you’ve come to trust and love our products will stay the same.”
According to the new website, the brand wanted to distance themselves from the cannabis scene, because “hemp and cannabis play very different roles in our lives, and we felt it was in everyone’s best interest that we stayed true to our mission that’s singularly focused on delivering pure, powerful, and most of all, trusted hemp products to people who care about their health.”

Select CBD Muscle Rub Review
For our Select CBD Muscle Rub review, we tested the 3oz, 250mg Muscle Rub, one of three topical products currently offered by the company.
We review CBD topicals based on the quality of the hemp they come from, cannabinoid concentration, value, packaging, ingredients, scent and texture, and effectiveness.
Let’s start with Select CBD’s hemp quality.

Select CBD Hemp Quality
Select CBD uses hemp grown from Oregon farms licensed and regulated by the Oregon Department of Agriculture.
After the hemp is grown, the oil is extracted using ethanol, a common practice in the hemp industry.
Since Select CBD uses CBD isolate, the oil is distilled and purified.
Every batch of oil is tested by third-party laboratories, including Pixis Labs and Lightscale Labs, for cannabinoid potency, pesticides, residual solvents, heavy metals, and microbes.
These labs are accredited by the Oregon Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (ORELAP).
Third-party results are available directly on Select CBD’s website here.
Select CBD will often have cannabinoid potency lab results on their product packaging.
The company also manufactures, packages, and ships their products from a facility licensed by the Oregon Department of Agriculture.
The Muscle Rub contains 250mg of CBD in 3oz of cream, which is 83.33mg/oz.
CBD topicals vary widely in both CBD concentration and size, but they typically range from 150mg to 500mg in one to three ounces.
Also, topicals usually have 100mg/oz to 200mg/oz, putting Select CBD’s Muscle Rub a bit below the average.
While CBD can still play a role in the product’s efficacy, it seems the other ingredients are what give this product its benefits.
The Select CBD Muscle Rub costs $35.00, which comes out to $0.140/mg and $11.667/oz.
Like with most of Select CBD’s products, the Muscle Rub is well-priced and one of the lowest prices on the market for CBD topicals.
Similar products intended to help with recovery and discomfort retail for $40 to $60.
The lower price may be explained by the low CBD concentration.
We were impressed by how low Select CBD priced the Muscle Rub.
Despite having a luxurious and premium vibe because of their branding and the quality of their products, we commend Select CBD for making an outstanding effort into making their products affordable.
The Muscle Rub is packaged in a box like other Select CBD products.
Unfortunately, there are no third party results on the box for the Muscle Rub.
However, there is a batch number that allows customers to look up their product’s results online.
We enjoyed the fact that the Muscle Rub comes in a squeeze tube as opposed to scraping the cream out of a jar.
Ingredients in Select CBD’s Muscle Rub include: Purified Water, Arnica Montana Flower Extract, Isopropyl Alcohol, Natural Menthol USP, Ilex Paraguariensis Leaf Extract, DimethylSulfone (MSM), Tocopheryl (Vitamin E) Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Carbomer, Triethanolamine, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Sorbic Acid, Hemp-Derived CBD Extract, Polysorbate 20, Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil, Pyridoxine HCI (Vitamin B6), EDTA.
The main ingredients here, besides CBD, are Arnica Montana Flower Extract, Natural Menthol, Ilex Paraguariensis Leaf Extract (i.e., yerba mate), Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, and Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil.
Arnica is anecdotally known to heal bruises and reduce muscle pain, but research is inconclusive on its efficacy.
Menthol is known to interact with the opioid receptors and provide a cooling sensation that alleviates pain.
Ilex Paraguariensis Leaf Extract, or yerba mate, may help with muscle recovery.
Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract and Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil are believed to have anti-inflammatory properties.
In our experience with the Select CBD Muscle Rub, we believe these ingredients—along with CBD—provide an effective combination for recovery.
Scent & Texture
As expected, the Muscle Rub smells like menthol, but unlike some menthol-infused products, the scent is not overbearing and is unnoticeable after a few moments.
The cream itself is thin and spreads easily.
We recommend using a generous amount though because it absorbs quickly into the skin.
It did not leave our skin feeling greasy; instead, it provides a relaxing cooling sensation.
We tested Select CBD’s Muscle Rub for its effects on recovery, irritation, and skincare like we do with other CBD topicals.
The effects were noticeable almost immediately and lasted for about two hours.
The Muscle Rub was most effective for recovery.
We applied the cream immediately after exercising and once muscle soreness had begun.
Using the cream immediately after exercise did not seem to reduce the amount of soreness we felt.
However, once the soreness had set in, the cream relieved discomfort for a couple of hours and also seemed to speed up the recovery process.
Also, applying the Muscle Rub to sore areas not caused by exercise helped relax muscles and relieve the discomfort.
We also used the Muscle Rub on bug bites to test its effects on irritation.
The menthol offered a soothing reprieve from the itchiness and even relieved the swelling of the bite.
It was inconclusive if the cream expedited the healing process.
Since the topical contains Vitamin E and menthol, we also decided to test the Muscle Rub’s benefits for skincare, although its obvious intention is for soothing muscle aches.
We applied some of the cream to our hands and face, but, as we expected, there were no noticeable benefits.
Pros & Cons
Pros of the Select CBD Muscle Rub:
- Great price
- Useful for recovery and irritation
- Excellent medley of ingredients
Cons of the Select CBD Muscle Rub:
- Low CBD concentration
- Effects last only a couple hours at max
Our review of Select CBD’s Muscle Rub has left us impressed in virtually every category.
While the CBD concentration is lower than we’d like, and the effects are a little short-lived, we were more than happy with the price and the benefits we noticed.
In comparison with other CBD topicals intended to help with muscle soreness, this is the most effective one we have found thus far.
We highly recommend Select CBD’s Muscle Rub for anyone needing to enhance their recovery regimen.
