Select CBD Review [2019 Update]

Avatar for CBD Editorial Team
Written by The CBD Insider

Our team at The CBD Insider is devoted to informing consumers and helping them find the best possible CBD products. We vet several companies each month, and only the best of the best receive thorough, in-depth reviews like this one.

Here, we’re reviewing Select CBD.

(Be sure to also check out our comprehensive reviews of Hemp Health Inc, Panacea Life Sciences, Receptra Naturals, and CBDistillery)

The Select CBD Muscle Rub was heavenly. The CBD-fueled cream immediately loosened up tense muscles and melted away the tension in our shoulders. Also, the menthol in the rub offers a comforting cooling sensation and soothing scent.

recommended product: select muscle rub

The Select brand began with the desire to help a friend.

Cameron Forni, the founder of the brand, wanted to develop a way for a friend with Barrett’s Esophagus (damaged tissue in the throat due to gastroesophageal reflux disease) to use cannabis, but in a clean and smokeless way.

When a doctor suggested that Forni’s friend should vape cannabis, his friend realized he couldn’t because of the silica glass wicks commonly found in vaporizers, which would further damage his esophagus and lungs.

As a result, Forni deconstructed vaporizer after vaporizer, and eventually landed on the organic, Japanese cotton wick.

This gave rise to one of the most well-known and excellent cannabis brands in the western United States.

The Portland-based company took its excellence to the CBD industry when they launched the Select CBD vape pens in 2017.

Since then, Select CBD has expanded its product line to include tinctures, gel capsules, topicals, pet tinctures, and capsules formulated by Montel Williams.

Select CBD operates by the book, manufacturing their products under the standards created by the Oregon Department of Agriculture.

All of Select CBD’s products are third-party tested to ensure they line up with the state of Oregon’s standards, which customers can request to see for themselves.

After a thorough analysis of the company and testing their products personally, our team is more than comfortable recommending Select CBD as a brand with unparalleled quality and potency.

Select CBD Review

select cbd brand criteria

Certain factors can make or break a CBD brand, such as how a company sources their hemp, or if the labeling matches what is inside the products.

At The CBD Insider, we measure the excellence of a brand by four primary criteria:

  • Where and how the company sources their crop
  • The extraction methods used
  • The extent to which their products are tested by independent, third-party laboratories
  • Current certifications from federal and state agencies, and industry organizations

Let’s start with Select CBD’s parent company, Cura Cannabis.

Select CBD Changes Name to Social CBD

As of late August 2019, Select CBD has undergone a name change to become Social CBD.

In an email sent to customers, Select CBD said, “Don’t worry, every reason you’ve come to trust and love our products will stay the same.”

According to the new website, the brand wanted to distance themselves from the cannabis scene, because “hemp and cannabis play very different roles in our lives, and we felt it was in everyone’s best interest that we stayed true to our mission that’s singularly focused on delivering pure, powerful, and most of all, trusted hemp products to people who care about their health.”

Social CBD maintains all of the previous Select CBD products, while also launching a couple of new lines such as Broad Spectrum CBD Drops and a Foot Renewal Cream.

Select CBD’s Parent Company: Cura Cannabis

Cura Cannabis, the largest cannabis oil company in California and Oregon, is Select CBD’s parent company and is based in Oregon.

The company has received several honors because of their Select CBD brand, including Leafly’s Best-in-State list for Oregon’s Best High CBD Product.

The company also has a large presence in California, Arizona, and a growing one in Nevada, in addition to their home state of Oregon.

Cura also owns another brand called Select Oil that sells cannabis oil, which contains THC.

Curaleaf Holdings, a Massachusetts-based cannabis company that is the most valuable in America, bought Cura Cannabis for nearly $1 billion in May 2019.

That is the largest acquisition among US companies in the cannabis industry.

Combining these companies gives each of them access to both the west and east coast markets.

Cura Cannabis Founder and CEO, Cameron Forni, is now the President of Select at Curaleaf.

Select CBD was not a part of the acquisition, however, since Curaleaf already has a CBD product line.

Angelo Lombardi, the current COO at Cura, is now also the President of Select CBD.

Where does Select CBD oil come from?

Select CBD sources their hemp from Oregon.

The farms Select CBD uses are licensed by Oregon’s Department of Agriculture, a must for all companies dealing with hemp-derived products.

“Our brand differentiator lies in our completely legal supply chain,” said a brand representative for Cura Cannabis.

The hemp is transferred to Select CBD in a chain of custody with a certificate of authenticity when it arrives.

Finally, the products are manufactured, packaged, and shipped by a facility also licensed by the state’s Department of Agriculture.

What are Select CBD’s extraction methods?

Select CBD uses CO2 to extract the oil from their hemp.

CO2 is a safe and clean extraction method that is considered the gold standard in extraction.

Select CBD’s Third-Party Testing

quote from cura cannabis

The brand has rigorous quality control standards for their hemp, which they claim is tested to higher standards than those for organic fruit.

All of their products are batch tested by labs accredited by the Oregon Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (ORELAP).

Those labs include Pixis Labs and Lightscale Labs.

Specifically, these labs test for cannabinoid concentration, pesticides, residual alcohol, and microbes.

“We’re also very focused on safety, and here we are proud to put all our CBD products through the most stringent testing standards in the country,” said a brand representative for Cura Cannabis.

While the third-party results are not available directly online, many of Select CBD’s products have results on their packaging. Alternatively, you can reach out to Select CBD and request the results of your specific batch number.

Select CBD Certifications and Awards

All of Select CBD’s operations are conducted under license by Oregon’s Department of Agriculture.

This means Select CBD is regulated by the state, which should give consumers confidence in the quality of their products.

Select CBD’s high standards have garnered the company some awards as well, including Leafly recognizing Select CBD as Oregon’s Best High CBD Product.

Select CBD Website

In keeping with the brand’s style, Select CBD has one of the most professional websites of any of the CBD brands we have looked at.

It has an attractive, modern, and simplistic look.

User Experience

Visitors to the site will find Select CBD’s online shop, information about their discount and referral programs, an FAQ page, several pages about the company, and a login for returning customers.

Navigation is easy with a consistent look across all of the site’s content.

The mobile experience is just as impressive, sporting a straightforward layout.

Return Policy

Select CBD offers a well-designed, “No Questions Asked” return policy that is typically quick and efficient.

You have 30 days to return an item and receive a refund. To return an item, it must be unopened and in the same condition you received it.

Customers will have to pay shipping and handling for the return.

Online Select CBD Reviews

You can find Select CBD reviews everywhere online but they are most highly concentrated on Trustpilot.

On Trustpilot, Select CBD has earned an average rating of five stars from more than 2,100 reviews.

Select CBD’s Trust score, which is determined by Trustpilot, is 9.1 out of 10.

Over 80% of the reviews on the platform give Select CBD an “excellent,” or, 5-star rating.

Nearly 10% gave Select CBD four stars, which is considered a “good” rating.

Praises

Most of the Select CBD reviews praise the company for fast shipping and excellent products.

Several reviewers claim that Select CBD oil has helped them live with less pain and inflammation, more calmness, and improved sleep quality.

Customers also say Select CBD has high-quality products at fair prices, a claim that our team can corroborate.

Some reviewers even praised Select CBD’s customer service team for helping them fix an error with their order or return a product.

Complaints

Looking at the negative reviews from Select CBD, a few patterns emerged in the complaints.

The two biggest complaints were a delay in shipping or unresponsiveness from the company.

Our own experience with Select CBD mirrored these complaints. It took months for us to speak with someone directly and get test products shipped.

In addition, we delayed our publication date several times to accommodate our Select CBD rep’s schedule so she would have time to look over our review. Ultimately, despite waiting an additional 48 hours past our hard deadline, our Select CBD rep did not get back to us with feedback.

This is particularly unfortunate because everything else about Select CBD is world-class. We hope to update this review sometime in the future with news that this aspect of the company has improved.

Select CBD Affiliations

Select CBD is affiliated with four organizations through their parent company, Cura Cannabis:

  • California Cannabis Industry Association
  • Oregon Cannabis Association
  • National Cannabis Industry Association
  • New Federalism Fund.

The mission of the California Cannabis Industry Association is to promote a responsible and legitimate cannabis industry in California through state advocacy, local advocacy, and educating people about cannabis.

Several businesses and entrepreneurs make up the Oregon Cannabis Association. This association’s goal is to help one another thrive through networking, educational workshops, and political representation.

The National Cannabis Industry Association (NCIA) is one of the largest cannabis associations in the US. Representing nearly 2,000 member businesses, and tens of thousands of cannabis professionals, the goal of the NCIA is to protect cannabis businesses and favorable state laws, while pushing for reform on the federal level.

New Federalism Fund advocates for fair and equal taxation for cannabis businesses. The organization also believes that state economies are best run at the local level, so they work to protect local regulatory systems for the cannabis industry.

Select CBD Vape Technology

cura cannabis quote

Select CBD pens are the crown jewel of Select CBD’s product line and have made the brand one of the industry leaders in vape technology.

“With this product line, Select became the #1 brand in Oregon, California, Arizona and Nevada,” said the brand representative.

The Wick

Select CBD uses unbleached, organic, Japanese cotton wicks in their vape pens.

For those new to how vaping works, the wick is the absorbent material that brings the e-liquid to the coil of the vape pen.

The coils are wires that connect to the battery, and when the battery is activated, the coils heat up and vaporize the e-liquid.

Since the wicks come in direct contact with the e-liquid, having high-quality wicks are crucial to enjoying the experience of vaping.

Cotton is the best choice for vape pens because it has a neutral taste.

However, cotton that is processed with bleach and dye can ruin the experience and deteriorate your health.

Using unbleached, organic cotton (Select CBD does) ensures a healthy and enjoyable vaping experience.

Other companies don’t have quite the same standards for safety and quality, according to Select CBD.

“From the inception of our company, we’ve been focused on innovating the vape device itself, as we found that many competitors were using silica fiberglass wicks with incorrect heating elements,” said a brand representative from Cura Cannabis.

Select CBD claims to be one of the first companies to have used organic, Japanese cotton wicks, which is considered the best cotton for wicking.

“We’re proud to have set the standard around Japanese cotton wicks, and the industry has followed suit in many ways since we began using cotton in our cartridges,” the company said.

This highlights the company’s dedication to providing people with safe and healthy products.

“Our goal is to provide people with the cleanest high-quality hemp oils, with the safest delivery methods available,” the company said.

The Cartridge

Cartridges are what hold the CBD vape oil.

In the case of the Select CBD disposable pens, these cartridges are pre-filled and are ready for consumer use immediately.

Select CBD uses a ceramic core cartridge that keeps the temperature even during use, which helps preserve taste.

The cartridges are made air-tight and tamper resistant to prevent damage or leaks in the pens.

Quality Control

Each Select CBD pen goes through seven levels of quality control during the production process.

In the process, the pens are cured for at least 24 hours before shipping out to dispensaries.

Curing allows for the wicks to be saturated with oil, which lowers the chance of mechanical failure or a burnt hit.

Select CBD also notes that the rate of failure for their vape pens is less than 1%.

The Future of Select CBD

the future of select cbd

If one word describes Select CBD, it’s “innovation.”

“When it comes to the brand family, our customers should know that our team is constantly innovating, and we have a ton of awesome products coming soon,” said Cameron Forni, the Founder and CEO of Cura Cannabis. “Select will always be our portfolio leader, and we have plans to continue expanding into new brand categories, into new states and countries, with new partners.”

Select CBD plans to continue growing their product line, which has already grown substantially in only a few short years.

Much of this innovation has moved Select CBD toward wellness-centered products, and they intend to continue down that path.

“Because our customers are very interested in the health and wellness aspects of CBD, we will release more products focused on wellness throughout 2019,” said the brand representative.

CBD has become the darling of health and wellness recently, which has given rise to high market projections for the industry.

Brightfield Group, a cannabis market analysis firm, believes the CBD industry will be worth $22 billion by 2022.

Select CBD thinks it could be more.

“This [projection] makes hemp derived CBD the fastest growing industry in the world. From the growth we’ve seen, we anticipate that number could be even higher,” said the brand representative.

That growth has come from excellence in the quality and efficacy of their products.

With the success Select CBD has witnessed, they are on the way to reaching their goal of providing more people with the safest, cleanest, high-quality hemp oil.

As Forni put it: “People, potency and purity have been our guiding light since the beginning—it’s the thread that runs through everything we do and the driving force behind every push for innovation.”

Best Products from Select CBD

Before we get into our reviews of the Select CBD products we tried, we have some favorite products for specific ailments that CBD is known to help with.

It was difficult choosing which products to include here because all of the products from Select CBD are superb.

Alas, we had to choose, so here are our two favorite products.

Best CBD Product for Discomfort

recommended product select cbd muscle rub

People are experiencing discomfort at epidemic levels, so it’s nice to find a product that can give you pronounced relief, even if for just a few hours.

That’s precisely what we found with the Select CBD Muscle Rub: pain relief.

Between the CBD and added ingredients like menthol, arnica, and tea tree oil, our team experienced relief from muscle tension, post-workout soreness, and even irritation caused by bug bites.

It also smells as good as it feels, providing a full sensory experience.

The Select CBD Products We Reviewed

We try products to ensure they are made just like a company says and to help you make the best purchasing decisions.

Our team decided to try the following products from Select CBD:

  • All Select CBD Vape Pens
  • Unflavored, Lemon Ginger, and Lavender Select CBD Drops
  • Select CBD Boost Gel Caps
  • Select CBD Muscle Rub
  • 20 mg Select CBD Patch
  • Relax and Alert Montel by Select Capsules

Why We Tested These Products

Our team decided to test these products because they seemed to best represent what Select CBD has to offer.

Also, they are popular types of CBD products, which allows us to compare them to similar products from other CBD brands.

We hope this helps you find the CBD products that are best for you.

Select CBD Drops Review

For our Select CBD Drops review, we tried three of the four flavors (Unflavored, Lavender, and Lemon Ginger) of the 1,000 mg Select CBD tinctures.

select cbd drops we tested

Concentration

According to lab results, our Select CBD tinctures all hit the 1,000 mg baseline and slightly exceed it in some cases.

At 1,000 mg, CBD makes up 3.33% of the 30 ml of oil.

Tinctures can have a wide range of concentrations, often ranging from 100 mg to 5,000 mg.

However, brands find consistency in the product size of their tinctures, as most tinctures contain one ounce of oil, including the tinctures from Select CBD.

At 1,000 mg, a Select CBD tincture provides an average amount of CBD with a considerable serving size of 33.33 mg of CBD.

Customers should keep in mind that Select CBD uses CBD isolate in their hemp extract, which generally requires users to use more to feel the same effect as full-spectrum hemp extract.

The tinctures contain no THC.

Value

All flavors of Select CBD Drops are priced at $65.00, which comes in at $0.065/mg.

When compared to products from other companies of the same size and CBD concentration, the Select CBD tinctures are some of the most cost-efficient on the market.

For example, CBDistillery—a brand well-known for having some of the best value and lowest prices—asks the same price as Select CBD for their THC-free, 1,000 mg CBD tincture.

Although Select CBD has the feel and quality of a luxury brand, it’s good to see them offer affordable prices in the tincture market.

Packaging

Similar to the vape pens, the Select CBD drops have excellent packaging.

The box the tinctures come in are identical, yet are distinguishable by a sticker on the front with the flavor name.

Third-party lab results are available directly on the box with cannabinoid potency and the name of the lab that tested the product.

The tincture bottle is dark amber glass, and the dropper inside has markings that let you know how much oil you’re taking.

Ingredients

Ingredients in the Unflavored tincture include: Hemp-derived CBD Extract and Fractionated Coconut Oil (MCT)

Ingredients in the Lavender tincture include: Hemp-derived CBD Extract, Fractionated Coconut Oil (MCT), Lavender Essential Oil, Chamomile, Passion Flower, and Stevia

Ingredients in the Lemon Ginger tincture include: Hemp-derived CBD extract, Fractionated Coconut Oil (MCT), Lemon Essential Oil, Ginger, Turmeric Herbs, and Stevia

Unflavored contains the base ingredients for all the other tinctures and is the simplest of the four, but is still powerful in itself.

The Lavender tincture features excellent added ingredients, such as lavender, chamomile, and passion flower. All of these are known for their relaxing and sleep-improving qualities.

The Lemon Ginger tincture introduces some other natural ingredients to synergize with CBD, such as lemon, ginger, and turmeric herbs. Ginger and turmeric are believed to help with inflammation, making this tincture best for those looking to help them recover from exercise or improve an inflammatory condition.

Scent & Flavor

Unlike some unflavored tinctures from other brands, Select CBD’s Unflavored tincture is truly flavorless and odorless.

The taste is pure and clean, without a hint of hemp.

This is perfect for those who have been looking for a tasteless CBD product but have been disappointed by other “unflavored” tinctures in the past.

The Lavender tincture had a subtle lavender taste and smell. This was a great relief because an overbearing flavor or odor would defeat the purpose of promoting relaxation and sleep.

Lemon Ginger was equally subtle, yet still tasty and enjoyable.

What We Used It For

We determined that we would test the tinctures’ effects according to the potential uses of their ingredients.

With that in mind, we tested the Unflavored tincture for common CBD effects like relieving anxiety, alleviating pain, and improving sleep.

We tested the Lavender tincture against its effects on relieving stress, promoting relaxation, and improving sleep.

Finally, we tested the Lemon Ginger tincture for its efficacy with energy, focus, and inflammation.

Effectiveness

According to the packaging, the activation time for the tinctures is 30 minutes, and we found that to be accurate.

The effects generally lasted for four to six hours.

With the Unflavored tincture, we found anxiety relief and help with sleep.

However, our team often required a higher dosage than we usually needed with full-spectrum oil.

Our team also noticed mild results regarding pain relief.

The Lavender tincture was excellent for relaxation and sleep.

One of our team members made the “mistake” of using the oil in the middle of a workday to help him relax. While he felt relaxed, he also struggled with feeling tired for the rest of the day.

Using the tincture about 30 minutes before bed noticeably improved our sleep quality. Team members fell asleep faster and slept through the night without waking up as often when to compared not using CBD.

Lemon Ginger was useful for providing energy and a boost in mental focus.

Team members used this tincture throughout the day to help keep themselves sharp and productive even during long days.

We noticed only mild results regarding inflammation.

Potential Uses

After testing Select CBD’s tinctures, we believe they have the most potential for relieving anxiety and stress, promoting relaxation, improving sleep, and boosting energy and focus.

Pros & Cons

Pros for the Select CBD tinctures:

  • Well-priced
  • Noticeably effective
  • Good flavors, not too strong
  • Supplemental herbs

Cons for the Select CBD tinctures:

  • Requires higher dosages for similar results as a full-spectrum oil

Select CBD Gel Caps Review

For our Select CBD Gel Caps review, we used the 1,000 mg Boost product from the Select CBD gel caps line.

select cbd gel caps we tested

Concentration

The gel caps contain 33.33 mg of CBD per serving with 30 gel caps per bottle, which approximately adds up to 1,000 mg of CBD.

This concentration is slightly higher than other brands, who often make capsules or softgels with 20 to 30 mg of CBD per serving.

What really separates Select CBD from the rest of the CBD capsule market is the concentration of their added ingredients in their Boost gel capsules, as well as their other capsule products.

In Boost, Select CBD adds 75 mg of Yerba mate and 75 mg of Moringa to each capsule.

That combines for 183.33 mg of active ingredients.

Value

As with the Select CBD Drops, Select CBD’s gel capsules are priced at $65.00, clocking in at $0.065/mg and $2.17/capsule.

This is a competitive price in comparison to other brands offering a similar product.

We compared the prices of capsule products from brands offering 30 mg of CBD and 30 capsules per bottle with Select CBD, and Select CBD had the best price of all of them.

Select CBD’s price also beat out some brands that only offered 25 mg of CBD per capsule in 30 capsule products.

What makes Select CBD even more attractive is the added herbs that many other CBD brands do not offer with their capsule products.

Packaging

Like with the vape pens and tinctures, the Select CBD Gel Capsules come in boxes.

This packaging differs slightly from the packaging of the other products as these are color-coded with the capsule name on the front of the box.

The bottles for the capsules have child-proof caps that require you to push and twist.

Unfortunately, with the gel capsules, the third-party lab results are not directly on the box or bottle, as is the case with the vape pens and tinctures. You’ll need to email Select CBD with your batch number to get the lab results.

The Boost gel capsules themselves are dark amber in color.

Ingredients

Ingredients in the Boost capsules include: 33.33 mg CBD, 75 mg Yerba Mate, 75 mg Moringa, Fractionated Coconut Oil (MCT), Gelatin, Caramel Color, Glycerin, Yellow Beeswax, Purified Water

Yerba mate and Moringa are the other main ingredients besides CBD, and they have similar effects.

Both herbs are believed to help combat fatigue, which could boost your energy and focus whenever you’re feeling drained.

Yerba mate is particularly powerful because it contains caffeine, which gives it the ability to energize.

Scent & Flavor

The Boost Select CBD Gel Caps do not have any noticeable smell to them; however, they do taste slightly sweet.

What We Used It For

We tested the efficacy of the Boost Select CBD gel caps based on how they affected our energy levels and their ability to help us focus.

Effectiveness

Select CBD does not provide an activation time for their gel capsules.

According to our experience, the onset time took about 20 to 30 minutes, and the effects lasted for about four hours on average.

Our team found the Boost gel capsules helped us feel more energetic and gave us mental clarity.

Boost was particularly beneficial in the morning, as it quickly got us out of our morning mental fog and improved our productivity from the start of the day.

The Boost capsules were also useful in the middle of the day for a pick-me-up when we started hitting the mid-afternoon wall.

Overall, our team felt a greater sense of productivity and accomplishment after using the Boost gel caps.

Potential Uses

After testing Select CBD’s Boost gel capsules, we believe they are useful for exactly what they’re advertised for: boosting your energy and focus.

Pros & Cons

Pros for the Select CBD gel caps:

  • Well-priced
  • Higher than average concentration of CBD
  • Noticeably effective
  • Variety of uses
  • Great added ingredients

Cons for the Select CBD gel caps:

  • None

Select CBD Muscle Rub Review

We tested Select CBD’s 250 mg Muscle Rub, the only current variation.

select cbd muscle rub we tested

Concentration

The concentration for Select CBD’s Muscle Rub is 250 mg of CBD in 3 oz of cream.

That’s 83.33 mg of CBD per ounce of product.

The concentration of CBD for topicals varies widely in the market, usually ranging from 150 mg to 500 mg, and rarely exceeding that.

The amount of product also differs, usually from one ounce to four ounces.

Select CBD’s Muscle Rub is on the lower end of the spectrum for the amount of CBD, yet on the higher side for product size.

Together, that’s a recipe for a low concentration of CBD.

While the amount of CBD isn’t negligible, it seems the other ingredients are what make this product useful.

Value

Select CBD’s Muscle Rub is priced at $35.00, which is $0.14/mg and $11.67/oz.

Once again, Select CBD has another excellently priced product that is one of the lowest on the market.

Generally, CBD topicals range anywhere from $40 to $60, and few are lower than Select CBD’s price per mg.

The low price from Select CBD correlates with the low concentration of CBD, but that does not mean this is a low quality topical.

On the contrary, the ingredients in Select CBD’s Muscle Rub make it a premium product that won’t break the bank.

Packaging

The Muscle Rub comes in a box that is not as flashy as some of the other products.

Unlike the other product packaging, there are no third-party lab results directly on the box, but a batch number to request those results is on the back.

Select CBD’s Muscle Rub comes in a three-ounce squeeze tube, which is an element we find more appealing than scraping cream out of a jar like most companies seem to do.

It’s a small, yet more professional feature.

Ingredients

Ingredients in Select CBD’s Muscle Rub include: Purified Water, Arnica Montana Flower Extract, Isopropyl Alcohol, Natural Menthol USP, Ilex Paraguariensis Leaf Extract, DimethylSulfone (MSM), Tocopheryl (Vitamin E) Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Carbomer, Triethanolamine, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Sorbic Acid, Hemp-Derived CBD Extract, Polysorbate 20, Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil, Pyridoxine HCI (Vitamin B6), EDTA

That’s a long list, so we’ll pare this down to the main ingredients (excluding CBD): Arnica Montana Flower Extract, Natural Menthol, Ilex Paraguariensis Leaf Extract (i.e., yerba mate), Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, and Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil.

Arnica is known to have pain-relieving properties and is often used to treat inflammation, bruises, and other similar injuries.

Menthol helps relieve pain by stimulating opioid receptors and numbing them. It also provides a cooling sensation that reduces the heat from inflammation.

Ilex Paraguariensis Leaf Extract is believed to help with muscle recovery, such as after exercise.

Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract and Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil both are known for their anti-inflammatory properties.

All of these ingredients combine to create a spectacular topical that is effective for alleviating muscle pain and inflammation.

Scent & Texture

The Muscle Rub has a strong menthol scent, but it’s not overbearing and dissipates quickly.

It’s creamy and thin, and rubbing in the cream only takes a few moments before it is fully absorbed into the skin.

It leaves no greasiness, only the cooling sense of menthol.

What We Used It For

We tested the Muscle Rub for its effects on pain and inflammation in the muscles.

Effectiveness

The Muscle Rub works almost immediately and lasts for about two hours.

We found great results with the Muscle Rub for pain.

Several of our team members carry stress in their shoulders and applying the Muscle Rub here helped the muscles relax.

The rub was also useful for inflammation.

We applied the cream to sore muscles from intense exercise and tested if it would help speed up recovery.

It seemed to help reduce recovery time by a little bit, but it was primarily helpful for reducing inflammation momentarily.

This reduction allowed us to put more focus on tasks rather than soreness.

One team member used the Muscle Rub on bug bites, specifically mosquito bites.

The cream alleviated the pain and inflammation for some time, while the menthol soothed the irritation.

Potential Uses

After testing Select CBD’s Muscle Rub, we believe it can be useful for relieving muscle tension, soreness, and irritation from bug bites or other irritants.

Pros & Cons

Pros for the Select CBD Muscle Rub:

  • Well-priced
  • Noticeably effective
  • Multiple uses
  • Excellent added ingredients

Cons for the Select CBD Muscle Rub:

  • Low concentration of CBD

Select CBD Patch Review

For our review of Select CBD Patches review, we tested the 20 mg Select CBD Patch Three Pack.

select cbd patches we tested

Concentration

Each patch is infused with 20 mg of CBD that is released over 24 hours.

While transdermal patches have been around for a while with other supplements and active ingredients, CBD patches are relatively new.

As a result, few brands have created a CBD patch, one of the most notable being CBDistillery.

CBDistillery’s patches have 40 mg, right in between the two versions of Select CBD’s patches, which are 20 mg or 60 mg.

As we’ll describe in the rest of this review, we believe that 20 mg is too little for the patches to be as effective as possible.

If we were to notice any effects, we would need to wear two 20 mg patches, which means it would be much more cost-efficient to purchase a 60 mg patch.

With that said, other customers could find 20 mg beneficial for them, especially if they are just beginning with CBD.

Value

A singular 20 mg Select CBD Patches is priced at $8.99, which is a whopping $0.45/mg.

The three-pack sells for $23.99, which is $0.40/mg and $8.00/patch.

This is a high price for a low concentration of CBD that releases gradually over time.

However, the value a patch possesses that other CBD products don’t, at least not to the same degree, is convenience.

Having the ability to slap on a well-designed patch that “permeates all seven layers of the skin,” as Select CBD claims, and not worry about it for 24 hours is one of the most convenient ways to take CBD.

Hopefully, as technology improves and more brands develop patches of their own, this will drive prices down.

Packaging

Our three-pack of Select CBD patches came in a box that contained individual packages for each patch.

The box does not have the lab results on it like other products, but it does have a batch number on the back.

The packages have directions on the back that show you how to apply the patch. Inside the package, you’ll find the patch, two alcohol swabs, and a small card with directions and pictures on how to use the patch.

The patch itself is skin-toned, thick, and 2.5” x 2”.

According to the packaging, and our own experience (i.e., surviving a shower), the patch is water-resistant.

You’ll learn how to use the patch in a couple of sections below.

Ingredients

Ingredients in Select CBD’s patches include: Polymer Blend and CBD Hemp Extract

Although the ingredients list is simple, the technology is anything but.

Whatever specific compounds or “ingredients” are used to create the patch, it is made in such a way to transport the active ingredient (in this case, CBD) through your skin and into your bloodstream.

Transdermal administration has one of the highest bioavailability rates compared with other CBD administration routes.

The absorption rate is around 40% for transdermal products, according to a study.

Applying the Patch

Putting on the patch is simple.

First, use the alcohol swabs to clean the area you intend to put the patch on.

Ideally, this should be a hairless and venous spot on your body, like your wrist or forearm.

If you want a more discreet location, the top of your foot could also work, as it is particularly venous and can easily be covered by shoes and socks.

Once you’ve cleaned the area, remove the protective backing from the patch and then apply it to the skin.

Press down firmly for about 30 seconds to make sure it stays on.

The patch should stay on with no problem after that.

We took showers, washed our hands, and slept with it on without it falling off.

What We Used It For

We tested the Select CBD Patch for its efficacy on anxiety, pain, and sleep.

Effectiveness

Unfortunately, our team did not notice much of a difference with the 20 mg patches.

The most useful aspect of the patch was that it provided a moderate sense of well-being and calm, but it did not take away anxiety like with other CBD products.

It may have helped with sleep slightly, but our results were too inconclusive to tell.

We think 60 mg of CBD—and higher CBD concentrations in general—would likely have a more pronounced effect and is better suited for transdermal administration.

Potential Uses

After testing the 20 mg Select CBD Patch, we believe it may provide a moderate, general sense of well-being and calm.

Pros & Cons

Select CBD Patch

The Select CBD patch line has two iterations:

  • 20 mg CBD Patch
  • 60 mg CBD Patch

Both products can be purchased in a single or triple pack.

Each patch contains an instruction card about how to properly apply the patch, as well as two alcohol swabs to clean the area of skin where you will put the patch on.

The 60 mg patch is slightly larger in size, measuring 3.25” x 2.5” while the 20 mg measures 2.5” x 2”.

Select CBD is one of only a handful of hemp-derived CBD companies that offer a CBD patch product.

Best Uses: CBD patches are usually best for alleviating pain, relieving stress, and improving sleep. They gradually release CBD over 24 hours and are the most convenient administration route that also maintains high bioavailability.

Select CBD Patch – 20 mg

Value: Single Pack: $10.99 ($0.55/mg); Three Pack: $29.99 ($0.50/mg; $9.99/patch)

Ingredients: Polymer Blend and CBD Hemp Extract

You can get the 20 mg versions of the Select CBD Patch in either a single or three pack.

These patches are tailored to those who require smaller doses of CBD to achieve their desired effects.

The pricing is a bit expensive for a single patch, but the three pack offer is not significantly better.

Since the transdermal technology involved is rather new for CBD, and Select CBD is one of the only big brands to offer them (along with CBDistillery) prices will likely remain high until more companies enter the CBD patches market.
